Avatars - I really give up

okay, last time I posted here I already had some problems with the avatars, then I upgraded the forum to 1.01 so that I had at least the latest upgrade installed. The problems I had with the avatars are gone, but now I've got new problems. First it didn't allow anyone, including me to add an avatar. Now it doesn't give an error, but when you hit the submit button, the avatar is gone and nothing shows up. Not even the old one. There's just nothing there. I really have no idea what to do. I didn't install anything, didn't make any changes, chmod it to 777, have the permissions right, have the right options on, but just nothing.

I really have no idea what else it is there's wrong, even when the filesize is correct etc...it just won't work. I give up...if anyone can give me any hints or advice: please!

Do you have a test admin account? Perhaps FTP details? Feel free to PM them to me.

thank you, I've pm-ed you the info.

After a brief look and some testing, I'm stumped. I can probably look more this afternoon but it may be something the developers should have a look at as well.

I keep getting this error when trying to upload stuff:

"Your attachment couldn't be saved. This might happen because it took too long to upload or the file is bigger than the server will allow.

Please consult your server administrator for more information"

However, I can upload it fine via FTP. I will take a look later this evening as well.

hmmm....weird...thanks for having a look though! I'll just sneak into this topic every now and then to see if there's any updates. Again: thanks a lot!

I was just wondering if there's any news. Is there something I can do to change it? It's not just this forum, it's happening on another forum of mine as well. Both times after I updated.
Maybe it's my host? I would just like to find out what's been causing this and fix it. So, if anyone has any solutions: I would still be very grateful.

I'm really sorry to bother you guys so much, but the "add attachments" seems to not be working either. On both forums. It really did work before, now I keep getting errors or no messages at all.

Do attachments of a smaller size, such as a few kilobytes, work?  Or do all attachments not work?

What avatar and attachment settings are you using?  If you turn off the checks for sizes, do they work any better?

Can you upload the following script to your site as a file named "testimage.php"?

<?php

var_dump
(getimagesize('http://www.simplemachines.org/adsystem/adimage.php?filename=lewis.gif&contenttype=gif'));
var_dump($_FILES$php_errormsg);

echo
'
<form action="'
$_SERVER['PHP_SELF'], '" method="post" enctype="multipart/form-data">
  <input type="file" name="test" />
  <input type="submit" />
</form>'
;

?>

What does it show?  What does it show after uploading a file?

twinklewitch

even the smallest attachements give an error the file is too big and took too long to upload.

I've uploaded the test file, but i'm not sure if what it shows is what you want it to show, hahaha. Anyway: this is what it shows after I've tried to upload a file:

array(7) { [0]=>  int(468) [1]=>  int(60) [2]=>  int(1) [3]=>  string(23) "width="468" height="60"" ["bits"]=>  int(5) ["channels"]=>  int(3) ["mime"]=>  string(9) "image/gif" } array(1) { ["test"]=>  array(5) { ["name"]=>  string(9) "cals1.gif" ["type"]=>  string(9) "image/gif" ["tmp_name"]=>  string(14) "/tmp/phpcCCuwp" ["error"]=>  int(0) ["size"]=>  int(58852) } } NULL

I'm clueless when it comes to these sort of things, so i'm not sure if I maybe did something wrong. I just copy/passed the code you posted.

[Unknown]

Nope, that's exactly right.  But, I'm afraid you're also right in that it's not what I wanted to see - it has no errors.  Everything is working perfectly in that area.

However, open_basedir is set.  Can you ask your host to add /tmp to the open_basedir?  It should look like this:

For http://www.theflyingdoctorsforum.nl/Forum/phpinfo.php:
/var/www/t/theflyingdoctorsforum.nl:/tmp

For http://www.thepoolforum.com/yabbse/phpinfo.php:
/var/www/t/thepoolforum.com:/tmp

Still, that shouldn't be causing these problems :/.  But, it might be... is your host good about this?

twinklewitch

I'll ask them about the tmp thing.

It's just weird that it worked before, and then all of a sudden it didn't anymore.

Thanks for all the help so far though!

[Unknown]

Do you know about when it stopped working?  It's very possible it stopped because of a change to your server (such as a software upgrade, settings change, etc.) - if you know the date, you might ask your host about that too - just in case they know anything.

twinklewitch

it turned out it was indeed my host who was causing problems. They have removed the openbasedir restrictions and now everything just works again!

Thanks so much for helping me out!
