Reinstall, Rebuild... Recovery??

In my last thread I was seeking support to resolve the problem of the slow posting rate (64 seconds each new post) but I think I'm just going to have to accept it isn't going to be possible.

I've removed mods, run all the internal maintenance programs, repaired and optimised the databases in phpMyAdmin, pruned the membership and deleted all topics and posts over a couple of months old.

My next query is to ask if it's possible to do a total reinstall of SMF v.1.1.9 (and then TP) but still retain all the archive material and membership lists... or would a reinstall delete the lot?

The reason for asking is that iirc, the site was originally built using 1.0.11 and upgraded from there. We've added and removed mods and themes as they have been found unsuitable and there is perhaps a buildup of extraneous code.

Perhaps a reinstall would clear out the detritus and restore the forum speed?

If this *is* possible is there an instruction set somewhere I could be pointed to?? I'm pretty useless technically but can usually follow instructions well enough if I have to! Also... would it be possible to move to SMF 2.0 RC1 and keep everything? :D

The only other alternative would be a total rebuild and I'd really prefer not to do this if it's at all possible to avoid it.

It shouldn't be a problem though I'd make sure you get all the mods in place before restoring the backup.

Specifically:
How do I save the database data?
How do I restore the database data?

Save it all, empty the live database, reinstall, readd all the mods, then restore.

Magic... thanks for the assistance. If nobody can come with an alternative suggestion to reduce the posting delay it looks like a busy and stressful weekend ahead for me!! :D

Sorry, but yes I suppose this thread is... but not the original one. I'm still hoping someone can come up with a solution. :)

Hope springs eternal... !

This sounds VERY familiar - a question to you welshdog, is/was your slow posting issue in every catagory? Mine appears to be selective

Wow this was a long time past. Yes it was in every category, and yes it was resolved in the end but we found it *wasn't* an SMF issue!!

For us the resolution was a long ongoing complaint to the host service who informed us the problem was caused by server overload!! To be fair to them they eventually moved us to a new server and until I screwed the forum a day or two ago it's worked perfectly ever since.

Sorry I can't be of more help.
