Changing frontpage or not?

By default the SMF theme shows the main boards, as almost every web forum software. However, some people use ssi.php to customize their own frontpages instead the main boards default frontpage.

now my question is: what do you prefer and why? have you changed your frontpage and if so, has it worked well for you?
