501 Invalid number of arguments (No working FTP Access)

If i try to install SMF to my All-Inkl. Hoster, it doesnt allow me to CHMOD automatically. The Login works, but it gives me this error message:

Unable to connect to FTP server with this combination of details.
501 Invalid number of arguments

I've already skipped that step and manually chmoddes these directorys, but then the automatic installation of Plugins doesn't work. The FTP Access doesn't work then, too.

I've got similar FTP Problems with another Webhoster (yopeho.de) on another SMF Forum I've hosted.

Are this known bugs, or do i do something fundamentally wrong?

Ok, i've ignored that Error message and CHMODed the Files/Dirs manually.

Then i couldn't install Mods. I had to manually create the packages/temp directory (777 it) to get to the installation process. This one now creates the DB-Tables for me, but the mod is not really installed after it. (Aeva Gallery in this chase) - Really strange behaviour here.!

It sounds pretty much like you might be using a wrong username for the FTP access.
FTP usernames are usually completely in lowercase and written as one whole word.

If you are certain your username and password are correct for the FTP access, then perhaps you should turn to your host.

No, im sure the username is correct - and if i cange it, it gives me a different Error Message (Wrong login or something like that). So the problem is not, that it cannot connect via FTP but somewhere else.

OK, I'm a bit unsure as to what suggest next - I've never seen that particular error message with SMF package manager myself.

I've got around this bug anyway ... installed it on a local installation (XAMPP) and installed the module there. Then uploaded the package back to the server. This worked for me.

Good thinking there It should work like that, as long as the mod doesn't make database edits, and if it does it usually has a separate php file that you can run standalone on your server, and so bypass the problem.

Yes, i also replaced/imported the SQL Tables.

But this is surely not the most comfortable Way to install Modules

If i do an Upgrade (RC4...) then i have to install the module again, right? (aeva Gallery). It patched some Files for me.

Yes, with RC versions the only provided way to update is by replacing files, which would mean losing all modifications done to those files.
After final release, there will be subsequent updates released as package manager updates, but not before final.

Hm, i think the bug still exists for me and makes SMF difficult to update. So i guess this issue is still alive?

Ok, for the Archive:
I'm using shared Hosting (all-inkl.com) and another one: (yopeho.de)
It doesn't work well on both, but the error slightly differs. Maybe if i have some time i can give a more detailed description!

old thread.. but the solution seems to be the correct folder..
i think the webinstaller don´t like root folder "/"...
but it´s possible to install there without problems by using folder "/."  instead.. (. is linked to the same folder)
the dot seems to be the solution..

in here it works now also on root folder
