2.0 RC5, unable to use *any* packaged mods made for this version?

Hello there!

I've newly converted a forum from phpBB3 to SMF and am looking forward to using SMF from here on out.

I have been having issues attempting to upload a few small mods via packages and the admin panel. I did a search of this community hoping to try and figure it out on my own. Several posts recommend CHMOD to 777 as well as uploading the mod archived into the packages folder and trying to apply them that way.

Out of frustration I have temporarily made everything 777 and attempted adding the mod to my packages folder archived for...nothing?

I get:
QuoteThe package you are trying to download or install is either corrupt or not compatible with this version of SMF.

Which I find hard to believe as this is the error I get for any of the 10+ mod files I downloaded from this site and all of them marked for 2 RC 5.

I am at a complete and total loss as to figuring out what to do next or how to even attempt manual installs and would appreciate any help. Especially, really, really simply worded for beginners help (lol)

Thank you!

Could you provide me the steps via which you install the modifications?

- Admin panel --> Package Manager?

OR

- Upload via FTP within the Packages directory and hit Install?

elf_fu

I did both, and sorry about not including that!

When I uploaded the files via FTP into my packages folder, in admin> packages, it showed up but no where was there any way, button or link anywhere to apply/install either.

Can you please link me to the modification you tried?

Ok, do this.

- Download: http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=2951
- Double click on it/open it and see if you can view the files within. Does it pop out with an error message?
- IF it doesn't show an error message, head over to Admin panel --> Packages --> Upload the package and tell me if you still face the issue?

elf_fu

Incidentally, that is the last mod I tried downloading. It was still in my admin>packages. Removed it. Re-downloaded it.

Double clicked after it finished downloading, able to view all of the files with no error pop ups.

Went over to admin> packages> uploaded it. Hit "Install  mod" and got the usual error message:

QuoteThe package you are trying to download or install is either corrupt or not compatible with this version of SMF.

Appreciate all the help so far, thank you!

Go to Admin --> Packages --> File Permissions

If you see anything unwritable, change it to writable. (Set the folder permissions to 755 or 777 using FTP and files to 644)

elf_fu

Thank you, but they already before I started this post. (As mentioned, I changed everything to 777).

Originally, they were all 755, and showing as writeable in the admin are of packages-- and I was having this issue. So I did some research here in the forums and decided to try to CHMOD it all to 777 before making a help topic. That did not work, and so here we are. :p

I know I know ;) I just asked you to check because many a times hosting companies do not give you full permission to change the file permissions. The ownership of the files is set to themselves instead of you so that you can not edit the file further on.

Hence the reason I asked you to check.

So, are they all shown writable?

If so, PM me your login details at your SMF forum so that I can have a look at it personally. This seems a bit odd.
I would also need your hosting control panel link, username and password there to make changes to the files. (FTP may just do fine..)

elf_fu

They are all showing as writeable, yep!

Thanks so much for this. PM with my details being sent. <3

F.L.A.M.E.R, I love you like a girl geek loves Wesker more than Chris and also Alistair from Dragon Age too much.

Thank YOU so much! The mod installed and I look forward to breaking installing more in the future!

For anyone else: If you decide to hide your SMF version and begin to have issues installing mods, putting it back in your index.php might help! It worked for me!

You might not need to edit files to fix this, simply using the emulate version option in package manager would do - You could tell it what version you are on, and it will believe that for the duration of the session.

How you can help SMF

Adish - (F.L.A.M.E.R)

That could be a possibility :) Never thought of that.. :)

You know, in my utter relief and haste to have a solution to my problem I didn't even try that. That's something to try and remember if I ever mistakenly do this again :p  Forgot all about it that! Thanks!
