Sending newsletters fails if you do not disable administration security

When sending out newsletters to large volumes of people, if the checkbox "Disable administration security" is not checked, it bombs in the middle of a send-out while asking for the administrators password.

In otherwords, if you have administration security turned on, you cannot send out a newsletter to a large amount of people.

Please define, large volumes of people, large amount of people.

We have 2 forums. One has 3400 members and the other has 4800 members. It appears this would happen with about 1000 members and up.

ApplianceJunk

I have sent out newsletters to over 10,000 members without having the "Disable administration security" checked and have not had it bomb in the middle of a send-out while asking for the administrators password.

It for sure depends on the settings and on how you are sending them (and probably on the server too).

If you are using the queue, for example, it processes 1000 members at time, while if you are directly sending mail it processes 60.
If you are sending them as PM half of the above.

Just for info: how are you sending the emails? With or without the mail queue?

I am not using the mail queue - and I am sending both emails and PMs to my own local mail server with no restrictions.

The admin password prompt is interrupting it for both myself and the other administrators.

emanuele

Out of curiosity, appliancejunk are you using the queue?

I'd be tempted to suggest that this is solved now. The mail queue is always on in 2.1 so pushing into the queue should be pretty quick and then it'll just filter out in the background.

Leaving open for further comments on the subject just in case.

does that mean the process that checks who gets the newsletter goes faster as the queue is enabled? that seems to be the issue that makes it takes a long time to send, not the actual mailing but checking who will receive the newsletter.

i know here when coreisp sends a newsletter even with the queue enabled it takes a while to actually process the list of who to send to.

Arantor

The problem isn't really the 'finding the list', it's simply that moving that amount of data around can be pretty unpleasant on a server.

But this is why I haven't marked it as solved; the original case as reported should have been solved by the 2.1 changes as-is. However the wider problem has not.
