Since it seems that a lot of people use the mod for this, I'd like to suggest making it a part of SMF 2.1

BK Modding Disable Decrease Post Count Option

QuoteThis modification adds an option in the Features & Options section in Admin Panel for admins
to disable or enable the decrease of post count for both, topic and post removal.
This mod is just for the members' post count.
Does not affect forum totals.

just out of curiosity - how do you get "alot of people"?

I have seen exactly one request for this. :P

(and again, more curiosity... why would anyone ever want this? If I delete a post, the user's post count SHOULD be deleted - Besides, the next time I run the maintenance to true up the counts, this would be overwritten with the actual number anyway)

Hi  BurkeKnight,

First of all, thank you for making a quality mod. I am not sure it should be integrated into the core though, as Kindred says, it seems a tad more logical to keep the post count updated. Hopefully you will port it to 2.1 though!

I already can install it onto 2.1 through emulating 2.0
However, I don't know if I should add 2.1 into the existing mod yet, since there is no selection for 2.1 compatibility in the Mod site.
If that gets updated, then I may. ;)

I thought this earlier in the day, but I kept feeling as though I was just being stupid, and misinterpreting what the mod does.

Given that it does do what I thought it did, I have to agree that I don't see much use for it, and I certainly don't view it as a core feature.

I know someone that in order to contain the size of the database periodically deletes the old messages. I can imagine something similar would be of some use to him in order to retain the "experience" of the old users...

That said, I'm not sure there are many people in such situation, but I don't have any data handy.

Take a peek at what I'm doing! ;D

alright...   I can see such an admin using it - but it seems a very limited case/scenario.
(and also still would have an issue, if he ever ran a maintenance function to re-calculate the post counts)

That's what I was getting at.
Do not forget, just because we do not see requests for it much, does not mean that people do not want/use it. Lets just say, if SMF here deleted all their old posts, many top posters would basically be back down to low posting members. That is why I thought of the idea of adding this to Features settings. I do see where the others are going, though, so I can understand why they disagree. However, do not forget, the forum admins would have a choice to use or not use this feature. ;)

Kindred

thing is, BK... I don't see 99% of the admins actually ever doing that (deleting old posts en-masse)
:)

I could see a forum owner wanting to archive older threads off to say, static HTML pages, in order to keep the database size reasonable. What if there was a new field in the member data for archived posts? Initially 0, SMF would increment it for each post sent off for archive (not a regular delete), along with decrementing the regular post count. When listing the posts of a user, add the archived post count to the regular post count to get the "big" picture (true historical post count). Any recount of posts would touch only the regular post count. Any activity to delete archived posts (probably outside of SMF) might do something to reduce the archived post count.

I'm inclined to agree that this should not be a core feature for the reasons given - and especially because it's available as a mod for those who *do* want it.

If there is a significant change in the mood, we'll review it for 3.0.

Not to start anything but I am one of the few that would like to get this mod again, mine got lost when the external I had left the atmosphere with all it belongings...LOL

The reason why we use it, we like seeing the total members' post count from the first they started posting because they get rewarded for posting, and not nonsense posts either. They love being gabby.

We don't get rid of posts too often but we would like to trim the forum after 10+ years and our DB is getting chubby. We noticed by accident that they disappeared  last year but we were having so many issues when the host went to PHP7 and did not say so...LOL

Also, how does one do the static HTML pages, and does doing this not decrease the post count of the members?

WELL, I am a dunce and decided to look on another external which is not supposed to have site mods...LOL and I found it. So deleted much of what I wrote , sorry.
