I have an established SMF forum but am working towards setting up an integrated Joomla/SMF site (with lots of problems along the way).

I have experimented with a test site and have everything set up and working perfectly. However, now I am girding myself to introduce the same set up on live with my established forum I am nervous about a few things. My current installation is in a top level directory (the subdomain name directory). When I install Joomla I have to install it in the top level directory, then have the forum software in a subdirectory, right?

Could anyone give me a step by step run through of the best way to integrate Joomla with an established forum?

Not at all.  You can put Joomla in any directory you wish, and SMF in any directory you wish.  It makes no difference, as long as they are on the same server, and the scripts have access to each other.

Well that should make my life considerably easier. I thought I was going to have to back up my database and reinstall SMF...

So if I install Joomla in the same directory as SMF there will not be a problem? For example: /home/user/public_html/subdomain name/. There won't be any conflict when somone tries to access the site? I assumed there would be some kind of problem with browsers not knowing which to open as the main page.

oh, you can not do that...

smf and joomla must be in separate directories... and if you want joomla accessed as the main page and the forum wrapped, then you will have to move smf into a sub directory..

just copy all files and directories into a subdirectory (say "forum") and the upload and run repair_settings.php. This will correct your smf settings. (no need for a new database... just moved files)

then you can install joomla in the root directory...
