Is there a limit to the number of users online at the same time?

Hi there!

I run a forum for some teachers in our school district. One teacher was telling me about an hour ago that he had is kids in the computer lab logging in to do some things on the forum and several of them were getting a "Please wait 2 seconds to login" error. Is there some limit to the number of people who can be logged in? I'm pretty sure I've had more than 30 people logged in at the same time before, but perhaps there's a setting that got changed with the last upgrade?

Help?

Thanks!

Rob

no.... there is no realistic limit to the number of people who can be logged in (I have had 200+ logged in at once)

that error message either sounds like your server may have some limit set or they all tried to use the same login ID...

i think there is a limit for how many logins per ip address, are they all trying to log in from the same external ip?

Ah hah. Now we're probably getting somewhere. :) Good question. They were all logging in on school computers in a computer lab, so that would have the same external IP showing. Is there a way I can increase that limit?

Illori

most likely there is a way but i dont know how. would it be possible to host the forum on the internal network where each pc would have its own IP address?

BYUFanatic

The forum is hosted on my own personal server and because it has videos on it (I'm a sign language teacher) it hits a lot of bandwidth. So the school likes that it's on my own server so as to not create a bottleneck.

Illori

are you sure the error message said to wait 2 seconds and try again? or was it 30 seconds?

you could try increasing the failed login threshold it might help... admin -> security and moderation failed login threshold

i guess putting in the number of users you have to log in at one time would help.

BYUFanatic

I didn't personally see the error. Just relaying what a teacher told me via email. I thought 2 seconds was rather odd, but...

As for increasing the failed login threshold - that's definitely something I don't want to do. I've had people try to gain access to my forum before and I don't want to do anything that will make their attempts easier.

Illori

well that is what is throwing the error, i dont think there is any other way around. it looks like to the forum that many people are trying to access the same account in a short period of time as the ip addresses are the same.

BYUFanatic

Ugh. That's for sure what is throwing the error?

Ok, maybe I can increase that threshold a little bit then.
