An option for members to be able to fill in their age, but hide it around the forums would be most welcome.  :D

Illori

why fill it in if you dont want it visible?

LadyAngel

Because my forum requires over 18 registration, but people may not want others to know how old they are!

You could use the registration agreement and registration settings to cover this.  See http://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/SMF2.0:Registration for more details.

Like users won't lie about their age anyway.

I'm not sure this would work since I'm not familiar with the age agreements or if smf checks for anything, but couldn't you just remove the default age field as required, than add a custom one that doesn't show other than for admins? Then people who want to show their age just fill the default one. Not the best solution, but could work for your case.

Though, I've wondered about this when editing those fields, why don't the default ones have options? I had to disable one and replace with a custom just to be able to change its settings on my forum.

age is not required by SMF by default...

As for hiding age, the admin can do that fairly easily by editing it out of display.template.php and profile.template.php

Or even users not putting in a year, just the month/day of birth.

Kindred

yup...    that's often what I do.  or I put 1901 :)

It is not, but for her forum it seems like it is, an option which is likely active on her forum.

If that was the case (removing it from the templates) you could just disable it altogether as well, I don't think that's what she is asking for. But Kindred has a point, if you're going to lie, it makes no difference if you type it in or if you just accept the agreement after all :P

I'm confused. Why put in a year so close to your real one? :P

Members choose to fill in their true age because it is the requirement of most forums, but they consider age as their secrets so they choose to hide them. However, mostly, members use  the fake age, in which case, it doesn't matter if the age is visible or not.
