Titles Only Again

I thought I had figured out a way to set guests to be able to view titles only (post titles) using permissions, but when I went to implement it I couldn't remember how I had thought I figured it.  Please advise on how to do this.  If this is not possible I'll repost in the MODs request area. 

Please note: 
1.  I have seen more than a couple other people ask about setting up their forums as titles only for guests, so its not a unique one person only desire to do. 

2.  I have seen on more than one occassion the stock knee jerk responses to try and dissuade them from doing it, but few if any actual attempts to solve the problem.  On one of my forums I really don't care if leaches get pissed off at not being able to leach without registering and never come back.  Please if you have some guidance on how to accomplish what I want to do I would very much appreciate it, but don't waste your time trying to talk me out of it or tell me how pissed you would be. 

If I can't do it with SMF I am sure I can do it with another script.  I have used several others in the past.  I would like to stick with SMF because I have used it for a few years now, and its easier to remember what I am doing from one forum to the next if they all use the same root script.

And for future reference, threatening to use other software if SMF can't do what you want is a really cheap trick, it's been done before and achieves exactly the opposite of its desired effect.

You can't do it with standard smf permissions, you need the mod that chalky suggested.

And it's not a knee jerk response. It is a well thought reps ones based on decades of experience, which is why smf never shows any action that the user can not complete...

I was not threatening by the way.  You may have "felt" like it was a threat.  I was just being clear that I wanted a solution to the problem and I would find it one way or another, and I didn't want to hear the same old lecture YET AGAIN. 

Also, I forgot to say thank you for pointing me towards a possible solution.  Thank you.  I will check it out.

well, it is part of our job to point out when admins are heading in the wrong direction -- so every time someone asks for something which is "wrong" in our eyes, they are going to get the "lecture" whether they want it or not.

FYI:  It looks like your solution is geared towards 1.0.X.  I asked in the support thread about 2.0.X, but so far no response.

The solution was originally written during 1.1.x, but it should work on 2.0, perhaps courtesy of How can I install a mod that doesn't work in my SMF version?

The view_only_boards_1.2c.zip version of the mod works fine on 2.0.8. Download that one.
