Missing Topics/Post Count from Child Boards

I recently reorganized my forum, and I now have nested some topics 3 levels deep. For most of them, I see the total topic/post count being counted from the parent, children and "grandchildren" boards. However there is one board that for some reason shows 0 topics, 0 posts, although there are a bunch of them there.

I'm running SMF 2.0.8 on a LAMP configuration. The site is http://geek-central.net/index.php?action=forum [nofollow], and the troublesome board is "Simulation Games" under the Video Games category.

And yes I've verified that I've checked off in the Board Settings "Count Child's Posts in Parent's Settings."

First.. Smf only counts the child count.., not the counts of grandchildren

Second... Did you run recount forum statistics

Well ...

1. I have other boards that are showing the "grandchildren" count, which is why it makes me wonder why it's not working for this one.
2. Yes I have, no luck.

Kindred

Unless you have installed a mod, grandchildren board counts are NOT counted at the top level. Period.  It's a serious hit on server resources.

Well I didn't install a mod and then why do all the other boards with grandchildren include them in the count?

That board with 0 topics is counting correctly. As Kindred said, only the child boards are counted.
In that case, only child-child boards have topics, so at BoardIndex you get "0"

Look how Kindred is right:
http://geek-central.net/index.php?board=118.0 --> 7 topics counted at board index
When you enter it, it's child boards have 4 + 6 topics. See the difference? ;)

By default, SMF only counts 1 level deep. If you need to change that:

Ok here is where my confusion comes from, so maybe someone can explain why the one board behaves differently. The links are all screenshots hosted on screencast.com [nofollow]

1. These two boards are nested in exactly the same way. One shows 28 posts in 7 topics, the other 0 posts in 0 topics: http://screencast.com/t/eZ3DaRGNq11c [nofollow]
2. Here is the dive into the first one, with it's 2 child boards: http://screencast.com/t/pW1J72f6rzEp [nofollow]
3. Here is the dive into the 2nd one, with it's 2 child boards: http://screencast.com/t/hxwYzAHo [nofollow]

So you can see why I'm confused since the one is showing that there are some posts/topics, and the other is not. At this point I'm just trying to figure out the difference in the behavior. Is it a bug? Did I set up the nesting incorrectly and it's throwing things off? Before I apply a mod, I'd like to understand what's going on with this first.

instead of posting pictures, can you provide us with a link to your actual site?

I did in the first post. It's Geek-Central.net [nofollow]

Kindred

sorry. I missed that. :)

so for example
your movies - sci-fi board has two sub-boards (child boards are renamed in future versions)
Sci-Fi shows 30 posts
Sci-Fi/Star Wars shows 26
Sci-Fi/Star Trek shows 4

this is correct.

Video Games - Simulation Games shows 0 posts
there are 2 sub-boards: The Sims and Sim City.
NEITHER of those boards actually have ANY posts in them at all...     the only thing in those sub boards are sub-sub boards (aka grand child boards)

Sp, it is completely correct.
Simulation Games shows 0 posts
The Sims shows 38 posts, but ALL of those posts are acually in the sub-sub boards - the Sims 1, The Sims 2, The Sims 3 and The Sims 4 -- there are NO posts in "the Sims" sub board itself.
Same goes for the Sim City sub board.

In other words, everything is working exactly as programmed.

Alright, I give up. I was asking about the RPG/MMORPG Games vs. Simulation Games. It's clear I'm not going to comprehend this (numbers + brain = ow). I'll just try the mod as recommended.

Thanks anyway.

Kindred

oh... I see...

and what I see indicates that you either a) have not actually re-run the recount statistics or b) have a mod or other manual change in place... because there is no reason that your RPG/MMORPG Games board should be showing ANY posts on the top-level index page

actually... you obviously changed something since I posted, because your simulation games is now showing a count of 49 as well.

I was asking about the RPG/MMORPG Games vs. Simulation Games.
Just so that you understand (in bold what SMF "sees" by default)
RPG/MMORPG has 0 topics and 2 child boards:
* Diablo III has 4 topics and no child-child boards
* World of Warcraft has 3 topics and 2 child-child boards (1+2 topics in these)
So, in total, you have 10 topics but SMF only counts 7 because it only "sees" until the first child board

Simulation Games has 0 topics and 2 child boards:
* The Sims has 0 topics and 4 child-child boards (1+1+2+5 topics in these)
* SimCity has 0 topics and 5 child-child boards (1+1+1+0+2 topics in these)
Now, in total, you have 14 topics but SMF counts 0 because it only "sees" until the first child board

This is the difference that you had. The MOD you installed counts all topis in all boards hierarchy, no matter the "depth"

Hope things are more clear now ;)
