What I would like to do is add Supporter or something that shows a member supports the site I have, I use the custom box for other things so  that is already taken,  adding a bar by their screen name, ive seen this on other sites.   I thought you may have something available I can add.

Looking

Something like this: Stars and Badges but it has not been updated in quite awhile?

burd

Cool.  I'll play with that and see.   Since it's a car site, I changed the stars to a RPM Tach,  using this may swap that out? I'd like to keep the tach, I was thinking of a simple bar that says supporter or something like that.

what I did
create a member group called Donator (or whatever you want) assign people that donate to that group

then using these two mods (some template edits will be needed for it to suit your needs)
Display Additional Membergroups and Display Additional Membergroups on Profile

these will show all additional membergroups that a member is a part of

Mick.

For that you don't need mods.  Just create a membergroup called "Supporter" or whatever. Add those users to it via their profiles.  It's also tied up to 'Paid Subscriptions' in admin. (You know, member buys a yearly membership and automatic he is in that new membergroup).

Replace the 'stars' with your Tach image. Plus users have their own different link color and you can add permissions as well per board or whatever the case may be.

There are different ways to do it, but simplest is what Mick. advised you to do. I don't have experience with Paid Subscriptions, but when you create a new membergroup you can choose it to be for this purpose Requestable - granting upon request through Moderate or Private where people with permission to give membergroup can do it. So you can give additional permissions and for some forums that can be attractive to users.
Another way is to edit on your own Custom Title of your members, so it has the same effect, or if you want it more complicated, you can make new Custom Profile Fields for members, there you have a lot of options.
Also you can use this awesome awards mod https://github.com/Spuds/SMF-Member-Awards, no limits with this, with little creativity you can do a lot because you can make awards and use it with name and there are different placements for awards. Also very similar mod is https://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=573947.0 , so I hope you can find creative way to make it be as you desire :)

The only problem is some of the people are already in a special group, now they would be out of that and in the support group.

You can put people in multiple groups. You just can't (out of the box) show two badges at once.

This is where I got the idea, it's not SMF I realize that,

I like adding the flag too, lol.

Yes, I do realise that's what you're trying to get to, I was just correcting the myth that you can only put someone in one group.

You have multiple choices; you can use one of the award/trophy mods out there to do it, or find the updated version of Stars & Badges (I forget what the updated one is called) to display multiple badges.

shadav

as stated you can add people to multiple groups

here are a few mods that you may want, this is how I did it anyways (as mentioned before).....

to add the flags: https://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=417

To Display Additional Membergroups: http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/?mod=3805

To Display Additional Membergroups on Profile: http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/?mod=620

To Display Both Membergroups and Post Group Stars: https://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/?mod=1530

In public view yes, but they should be members of 2 or more groups. Important note is how you are adding members to the membergroups. If you go directly through member Profile/Modify Profile/Account Settings and someone is member of few membergroups, you have to set Additional membergroups each time you hit to change Primary membergroup >> this is very tricky way to promote someone and you always have to set Additional membergroup or member with more membergroups will be removed from all membergroups except Primary membergroup. So use Moderate button from menu/Membergroups/View Membergroups to promote people and you always have to check Profile/Profile Info/Show Permissions to see what membergroups exact member have. Also when removing member from membergroup you are advised to always use Show Permissions to be sure that member is out of membergroup because he can be without special membergroup icon shown on his name, but with access from special membergroup, so someone can be hidden administrator and you won't know about it, so always check.
Custom title and Custom Profile Fields should do the job, but you will have to add manually, unless if you have requestable membergroups.
I dislike having few membergroups displayed, having avatar + few membergroups icons is just visually ugly.
