Want to go back from RC2 to 2.0.18

My old webmaster stuck one of my forums on RC2 from 2.0.15

I need to change it to stable release 2.0.18

RC2 appears to have changed all the usual package update procedures that I used to update all my other forums

I've tried the Major Package update but that doesn't work and tells me the package is 'empty'

What are my options and can anyone help?

Aleksi "Lex" Kilpinen

Roll back to a previous backup, or do a large upgrade to get up to date with 2.1. The current version being RC4. There is no supported process for going backwards.

sorry there's no real way to downgrade

if you have a backup of your site before you moved to the rc versions (which are not meant for a live environment) you could restore the backup (though you would lose any posts and things that happened in between the update)

[edit] lol lex snuck in there and posted while I was typing

Sorry, no backups that old

I read a thread somewhere here that I didn't bookmark and now can't find that stated a Major Package update would work as long as the DB was OK

Is there a way to migrate all the forum content to a fresh 2.0.18 install?

There is NO supported process for going backwards. I suggest you do a large upgrade to 2.1 RC4.

I do not want to be using an RC, I want to be using a stable release as my other forums.

Is there a way to migrate all the RC forum content to a fresh stable install?

Will an RC take a Major Package update to a stable release package?

Aleksi "Lex" Kilpinen

Everything is possible, but it really is not that easy. The Large Upgrade packages are designed to be one way only, and the database changes between 2.0 and 2.1 would break your forum if you simple threw 2.0 files on a 2.1 database.

If the Large Package update is unfeasible, can the forum content be migrated to a fresh 2.0.18 install?

Or am I completely screwed on stable SMF until 2.1 gets a stable release?

You have to wait till 2.1 final.

RC4 is close to final, there should almost be no issues just minor edge cases.

You can't upgrade via package manager to final.

But the only big issue would be if you install mods they will need to be installed for final.

Someone might be able to do that for you, at least partially, but I'm guessing you would have to pay that someone for the work.
It would be manual work, no magic tricks to get it right fast, if at all.

Can, and will, the package manager do the RC2 to RC3 to RC4 updates as it did with the stable updates or will I have to do a Large Package update to get to RC4?

Aleksi "Lex" Kilpinen

With RC versions, only the large upgrade is available. Overwrite files, run upgrade.php - pretty simple. Only downside is losing possible modifications in the process.
Luckily, we don't expect too many of these upgrades anymore, and when 2.1 is marked stable, it will again get package manager updates.
Always remember to backup though, before doing any major changes like upgrades.
