Hi

I an trying to upgrade my old forum to 2.0.18 from 1.1.17 (I think) and when I run the upgrade.php script it halts at 14%

Executing upgrade script 1 of 2.
Executing: "Updating and creating indexes..." (1 of 19 - of this script)

!!Error!
Unknown Error!

I have no idea where to go from here. Any help would be appreciated.

thank you

I came here for exactly the same thing. I'm upgrading (or trying) from 1.1.21 to 2.0.18 (though I also tried to upgrade to 2.0.1 with exactly the same hang-up).

I have a large message board that I am trying to convert, but wanted to do a test run before doing so--it didn't go well. I keep getting the unknown error at the same spot that ElrilGalia mentioned in the first post.

I am using a fresh install at dangerouslymisinformed dot com/fictalk/ (though it's now in maintenance mode due to the upgrade attempt; I may try to roll back and try it again, but am hoping for some advice...)

The PHP version here is 5.6x, but I also tried it from one that is using 5.4 with same effect.

Update: I was able to get access to run the upgrade from the console, and was hoping to find out what the error was that was blocking. Good news is that it ran perfectly and updated the database (the pretty fresh low volume one...I'm going to do a test run with a copy of my large db next...). Bad news is that I have no idea why it kept getting the unknown error during any of my previous attempts.

So...if you have access to be able to update via the command console, I'd try running the update.php from there.

I read about doing this from a command prompt but don't quite understand how. Obviously not from my PC. Where can I find this on my server?

thanks for your help :)

Something has obviously been changed in upgrade.php, but nobody's talking.  If you can, try downgrading php to lower version (5.6) and run upgrade again.

Just lurking and clicked on this topic after reading something similar in 2.0.  Could this person's solution (link) pertain to this case?  (Trying to learn "some stuff".)  :)

I just tried that and still got the same error at 14% using Chrome

Now trying it in Microsoft Edge and it's running the script! :D wow!

However the forum is still giving the
"Upgrading the forum...
Don't worry, we will be back shortly with an updated forum. It will only be a minute ;)."

even though it says it has upgraded it... how do I get rid of that?

Take it out of maintenance mode.  You should be able to login as admin, look in Admin -> Server Settings.

I checked the settings, its in maintenance = 2

which means there are no login abilities.

Ok thanks! I'm in now.  Does it matter I've forced it to do that?

Sir Osis of Liver

No, that's an option in the upgrader.  It asks if you want to enable maint mode before upgrade, which you did.  No harm done.
