Avif appears to be offering much better compression/quality ration than jpg/webp and it is supported by major browsers. Maybe consider supporting it?

The second link I provided is to an article from August this year and, according to the article, "... image decoding isn't done by the browser, it's done by the operating system. ... The reason why Safari doesn't support AVIF is that Apple hasn't added AVIF support to iOS, iPadOS, and macOS."

Also, the following from by Sam Sneddon, a software engineer at Apple that works on WebKit, in August this year: "The Apple ports use the system-provided image decoding capabilities; we're unlikely to deviate from that here, so any support for AVIF depends on underlying OS support. I can't comment as to whether any future OS releases will support AVIF."

I've been looking into AVIF support some more and it seems that only PHP 8 and later will support it and until then commands like getimagesize will not work for AVIF images ...

A modification can add this easily enough, but it won't be going into our bundled features for SMF 2.1.
I promise you nothing.

Sesqu... Sesqui... what?
