I received an email from my 2.0.18 forum:

There has been a problem with the database!

This is a notice email to let you know that SMF could not connect to the database, contact your host if this continues.

When I checked the forum all was well and there were no forum or server errors in  the forum folder.
The Word Press folder did have errors in the log:
PHP Warning:  mysqli_query(): MySQL server has gone away in /home/ridemsta1/public_html/wp-includes/wp-db.php on line 2056

Both the forum message and the error were dated 12/4/21 no more since then. The Word Press site seems fine.

Database connect errors are common on some hosts, not really a problem unless they occur frequently.  Usually caused by overloaded server.

If it happens once or twice, no problem - That's bound to happen at some point.
If it starts happening more frequently, then you've probably got an issue somewhere.

Thanks for the replies. There has only been the one instance so far. The forum is hosted by Godaddy. We are coming up on the end of our 5 year subscription and I am considering a move. However we have really had very few problems.

You can really count yourself lucky, 5 years on GoDaddy is an achievement on it's own.

I logged into our forum servers phpMyAdmin yesterday and discovered that backup tables have been created for all of the SMF tables in out forum database. I assume this is related to the recent database problem  Should I delete  them or just leave them?

Aleksi "Lex" Kilpinen

Backup tables are usually created only when upgrading. If everything is working correctly and you are sure you don't need them anymore, it should be safe to delete them.
