Hi everyone,
I hope to find some clarifications on your help forum.
I'm Axel and I have in my new charge to manage an old forum used by a vintage motorcycle club.
The forum in question is: "terrot france free fr /forum".
I assume that the solution is hosted at free but I do not have access to the server on which the forum is hosted so my question is, having access only to the forum, do I have the possibility to upgrade the forum version to a newer version? I am also looking to update the security when creating accounts to avoid being continually invaded by robots by adding a captcha.
I was able to make a backup of the sql database from the forum.
Thanks in advance,
Axelo2.

If you do not have access to the server, or if you do not have the ftp info, then I am afraid that you can not upgrade your forum.

You originally posted this in french on this section, and then changed the post to english. Please stick to one language as that resulted on the topic being moved back and forth from here to the french forum, and then back here again.

If you wish to post in french, you can do so at the french language board.

If you have a complete database backup, best thing to do is set up a paid account with a decent host and restore the forum there.  Only content you'll lose is attachments, which I'd guess you have a lot of.  If you have access to free host support, you can ask them for copy of /attachments (good luck).  At some point your host will upgrade php and forum will stop running.

Hey both, thanks for this very quick answer, very appreciated.
Yeah, I'm french and I was prety sure to be on a french page but then I was not sure because on a English page and I prefered to switch my message in English, sorry with that.. ^^

Ok so I will try to get more info about the host.. As you know in a vintage motorcycle club, there is some vintage persons (shhh I didn't say anything) and they don't remember who created it in the past, nobody has access to nothing etc..

Yeah there is a lot of attachements like pictures so it would be a problem do not migrate them.

So first I will try to get an access on the host and then update you for next steps.

Thanks for all,
Axel.

No problem at all :)

May I ask why you do not have access to the host? Did you inherit the forum from someone else?

Axelo2

Yeah for sure, I'm not an hacker lol, and know I'm coming here with a crazy situation ^^
I have herited this job as I'm new member of this club. As my personal job is in the IT, this is why it's my part to manage that.

As they don't understand nothing in IT... and also the forum created something like more than 10 or 15 years ago by a guy not anymore in this club, I'm now in this situation..

I have explained them that and they will will provide me some names to contact to get more info about the creation of this old forum!

Good luck with sorting all this out. Please let us know if you will have any additional questions.

Regarding the part above, how big is the forum? The backup function built in the admin panel of the smf forum can not handle large sizes. So the chances of the backup not being complete for large forums are very high. I would check the backup file if I were you to make sure that it is complete.

Hey all,

Finally, I got some credentials and I have now access to the MySQL database (5.0.83) managed with phpMyAdmin (3.1.5).
But still no access to the host, looks to be an Apache server, what PhpMyAdmin show me.
If think I can do a dump of the database to save everything but then.. I don't where to go ^^.
To remind my goal, first I want to do a save of every what I can do, then check the possiblity to update the forum version and to finish, export to a new host where I will have correctly the hand.

Thx by advance,
Axel

Hey man thanks, but for this part it's ok, database is 34Mo.
But now idk what to do, I think I need the access to the FTP to push files of the new SMF version.

vbgamer45

Yes if you want to upgrade the site you will need ftp access.
Also, make sure you have backups I am always worried about free hosting companies lasting.

Whooo I found the access to the FTP with filezilla. I can add/remove files.
I will try now to find on the forum some guides to update my current version. I'm currently with SMF 1.1.21.
So I confirm I have now admin access to:
- Forum
- PhpMyAdmin
- FTP host

Backup/download all files and database save a copy first.
Before doing any work.

Axelo2

Yeah good to know.
I'm downloading everything from the FTP 15Go. On the same FTP ran in the past an old website linked to this old forum.

Axelo2

I think the first thing I have to upgrade is the php version, it's currently on "4.4.3" and with it I can only upgrade to "2.0.13".
But not sure I will be able only with the FTP access.

The only one access missing now is a SSH access but looks like it's not available.. In all cases I'm happy as this evening as was able to go ahead on the subject.

Before downloading any attachments in FileZilla make sure to change the settings BEFORE downloading - as per https://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=374178.0

Axelo2

Whoo thank you for the info, was not aware of it.
So I uncheck the box and redo and copy of everything to be sure. Thx man!
