I went through a spell where I tested every single one I could find, most are very similar and quite basic.

That's not a knock on them, everything has a beginning.

I really liked SMFPacks CMS (paid) but my site refused to work nicely with it. If you want something that's easy, powerful and can act like a fully fledged site - I would recommend it.

If like me, you're not so familiar with caring and managing SMF.

I would say go for Tiny Portal.

There's a learning curve but it's outstanding, support is top notch and the whole team are very friendly. If you get stuck, need help - I can vouch you won't be on your own with TP.

I didn't like Simple Portal or EZPortal, despite the similarities. Both are very basic and quite old fashioned, with no room for article based content (at least from what I could find).

I'm sure each Portal has its benefits for each individual, my comments aren't ment to be harsh but a true reflection of my opinion/experience trying them up. I would say, that it's important to go with one that's well developed and supported mind.

I'm not sure how many portals SMF needs in truth, but options are never a bad thing.
I'm stuck in a time warp from the early 00's.

Until the This Issue is resolved, running/upgrading Tiny Portal on SMF 2.1.3 is impossible.

There's a workaround I believe which @rjen shared.

Running TinyPortal is NOT an issue, installing TinyPortal is NOT an issue: TinyPortal itself is compatible with 2.1.3.

just Re-installing on SMF 2.1.3 gives an error due to the bug in the SMF package that prevents the TP installer to update existing TP tables.

Workaround is indeed available for now and works fine as you just confirmed on the TinyPortal site...

Hoping that SMF version 2.1.4 is released soon though...

You're right.  I posted that BEFORE I found a resolution.  My bad.
