but what is gonna happen when the public beta goes out everyone is gonna go ahead and do it and the support board will become a night mare.

To prevent people from using the first open beta in a production environment, maybe someone could instruct us (in the appropriate place) how to test it locally.

To tie several of these comments neatly together, this whole testing business strikes me (oh yes, I'm wearing my 'team' hat here!) as absolutely crucial to the public beta/YaBB SE conversion stage...

Today I've been working on my two smallest boards, preparing them for 'live' conversion. To me, this means installing discrete local copies of YaBB SE 1.5.5, importing my remote DBs to make them look/feel right, archiving any graphics and settings that I need from the YaBB SE versions to keep them handy, upgrading the local installations to SMF (some practice in trouble-shooting here will save you untold grief when you come to your 'live' boards!), creating new themes from my old templates/settings/graphics so they're all ready to go and, above all, making absolutely sure I'm clear about what to expect when I start repeating the whole process for 'real'. To which I must add that, while the new template system has mind-blowing potential, mastering enough of it to turn your old YaBB SE template into your first real theme is surprisingly straightforward so long as you're prepared to stop, read, think and not subject yourself to the unnecessary pressure of leaping in both 'live' and feet first. But I still quite simply dread what's going to happen when all these impatient users finally get hold of that public beta, ignore everything I've said here and try to convert their YaBB SE boards on the fly! :-X

You cant blame the team for not cranking out the public one too fast, cause its still gonna be beta, the team is still gonna say DO NOT INSTALL THIS LESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOUR DOING...............but what is gonna happen when the public beta goes out everyone is gonna go ahead and do it and the support board will become a night mare.

Release the public beta, then disable the support board.  Problem solved!  :) :)

That thought had crossed my mind but I highly doubt lewis media is going to do that although I am no rep of SMF how ever.

Thank you for informative replys. It feels like the waiting never ending  :-\

I did not mean YaBB SE was unfinished, more that it hade bugs in most releases and the feeling was like unfinished, sorry for badly formatted text.
I have read of some membership like "buy before you try" but i would rater stay on "try before you buy" style  ::) None use to buy for anything before you see it or know what you are pay for?
Hope it is sooner than later or never  ::)

Grudge

Never ain't really an option :)

We're doing our best to erradicate bugs before we release, even for the public beta. Be patient - good things come to those who wait ;)
I'm only a half geek really...

the speed of producing SMF is pretty fast, i think, since it seems to be basically one guy doing everything from coding to support (i know Jeff did spell-check, & said they "guys" who are coding are doing a lot.  also Grudge, Dave, & others have done some stuff, and others are offering some help).  but with YaBB SE, i had the sense it was more of a team project. is this correct?

heh - I added three things to CVS today... (albeit small :D)

Compuart does quite a lot of developing, Unknown chips in here and there :P

There's more to producing a forum than coding it, we have a big team of people who do everything that's needed to make SMF what it is and is going to be - in particular support staff to make sure people can actually use the damn thing  :)

Yes because we all know all of the team and Charter Members are going to have to answer 64564658460324 questions once its released :P. (That was a random number for the record)

Coming soon!

That's exactly what I'm planning; getting a feel for SMF, too, checking out where the settings are that I need etc. Plus, I get to play with it without doing any harm!

QuoteTo which I must add that, while the new template system has mind-blowing potential, mastering enough of it to turn your old YaBB SE template into your first real theme is surprisingly straightforward

I hope so... This other forum software I've been using has a lot of handy features, but you can get really lost in the ACP. I hope SMF will be somewhere in between.

Maybe when the time comes, a Sticky with this info, as an faq, would come in handy. I am sure that many people do not know that they can/ should do it locally, much less how it is done. Including another tutorial about how to install a local server. (I would suggest to select the package (!) which is most easily installed for this purpose.)

It might be tedious but also save support a lot of time.
