Killer Possum

Your install.php file will be located where ever you have uploaded the files. For instance, if you uploaded it to a directory called forum then you would navigate to www.yourdomain.tld/forum/install.php

Lionmane

That's what I meant by "forum's root directory".  It's not there.    :(

Gary

The forums root directory is the directory where you uploaded the forum. There isnt a folder called "root"

So http://your-domain-name-here.com/forum would be your forum's root directory.

(Sigh...)

Could someone please download the zipped version and check if the install.php file was included?

Ok, just for clarification, let's examine my first post:

Hi!

I downloaded "smf_1-1-rc3_install.zip" and attempted to install it on my server.

1) I downloaded the zip file
2) Unzipped it
3) Uploaded it to my domain in a folder named SMF

At this point, the instructions say to run the "install.php" in the forum's root directory.  I couldn't find "install.php" anywhere.

Any ideas?  Thanks!

mw

You'll notice that I put quotations around the proper filenames.  I didn't put quotes around

Quoteforum's root directory

This indicates that my usage is not as a proper name.

Now, let's examine my 2nd post:

This time I did use quotes.  I guess this is the part that confused people.  However, if you'll notice the context I'm obviously quoting myself.

Conclusion:
Yes, I know the proper usage of the term root directory.

Hopefully, no one will criticize me for using the word "term" above. ;D

Now that that's (hopefully) clear:
I couldn't find the "install.php" file in the (oh no, here we go) forum's root directory.  The instructions say to delete it when you're done using it, so I imagine that whoever uploaded it deleted it first.

Has anyone checked the zip file:
"smf_1-1-rc3_install.zip"

Because there is NOT an "install.php" file included with it.

Are you sure you downloaded the right file? I just checked and it is there.

Ok, I downloaded it again and after unzipping it found a LOT more files than before (including install.php).

I guess my download was corrupted the first time or something.

Anyway, thanks for your patience and help!

Gary

That or you downloaded an Update or upgrade package. ;)

Could be...  Knowing what a root directory is doesn't make me immune to bone-headedness!   :)

When will the FINAL Release be available? Any idea or schedule?

Gary

There is no ideas or a schedule, it'll be released when it's released.

Hi - i am planning to install the latest version.

I have read some of the postings and can see that asking for "when will it be released" is a bad idea.
But..  What is the reason for it, not being released - are we waiting for tests done by a beta team or are we waiting for a fix of some bugs not announced ?

Bare with me.

Kind regards
her_er_jeg.

Harzem

1.1 is continuously tested by a beta tester team and the bugs are being fixed when found. When the developers are confident that there are no (or very few) bugs left, they will be releasing the final.

NickInTheNorth

well if that isn't just typical of SMF  ;)

Won't release buggy software!

They'll never get as big as Microsoft :P

Agreed, microsoft is too big and they also are poorly managed in my honest opinion although others will oppose that.

QuoteUpgrade is to go from a previous branch or older versions of the same branch.  So SMF 1.0.x to SMF 1.1 RC3 would use the Upgrade.

Please someone explain to me why there are 2 seperate versions and what the differences are or where I can read up on this?

I want the best of what I can get with this forum, but I grabbed and installed the first, most up to date version that I saw. This was 1.0.9, now I am seeing that the RC is better? I just don't get all of this... help... please... someone  :-[
