SMF Version: SMF 1.0.7
I am totally new to this, so please bear with me.

I'm trying to install SMF theme TP_DilberMC, and am having a problem.

Every instruction points me to FTP, but I can't seem to find an ftp program that's actually understandable. The graphics used in Smart FTP and Cute FTP don't match the instructions.  The buttons they say to click aren't showing up on what I've downloaded.

Is there a really easy program out there for FTP?

This is just the beginning...

Thanks for any help!

jerm

To install the theme, you can use the theme manager in smf
Admin > Theme and Layout Settings
Then use the "Install a New Theme" area

If you cannot find and ftp program you like then download the zip of the theme you wish to install and use the settings jerm describes as above. That way you don't even need an ftp program.

;)

Thanks! One more question: How do I use those settings if SMF isn't installed yet?

redone

You have to have SMF installed proir to doing any of this.

Now w're back to my original problem, and that is, how do I install SMF on a new host? FTP doesn't seem to be working for me; is there another way??

Well, if your host offers Fantastico, that might have an SMF package you can install, but I can't say how good it is (I have read reports about issues with it).

FTP isn't too difficult really. I recommend FileZilla for an FTP program. It works quite well, and is fairly simple.

My host doesn't offer Fantastico. SMF isn't supported. I did finally upload everything using 3D-FTP, but now I can't find where the files went to.

*sigh*

Thanks!

I highly recommend talking to a friend who is good at these things and ask them to set stuff up for you.

Really? But this is SMF! It's EASY! And I should be able to find answers here. That's should.   :P

There are certain prerequisites to installing any web application. Also, each web host operates differently. That makes installation help a bit more difficult if you are unsure how ftp uploads function with that host.

That site will help you out a great deal on how to install smf

I had the same problem :( I copied the smf program via usb stick to the location for where you want the forum to run from. I am using Linux it is in /mnt/forum run the install.php where it asks for ftp location it will list a bunch of files it is complaining about just change the permissions to read write & execute & run the install again & it will get over the fact that it cant see the ftp server. After that just follow your nose.

I already followed that. It was no help.

I downloaded the zip. Now, where do I upload it to on the new site without using FTP?

FTP is what is used to transfer files between computers.

You should use FTP to upload your unzipped files.

I'm guessing that you will then run into problems setting up the MySQL database side of things.

If this is the first time that you've done this I'd suggest getting to grips with FTP first.

Web hosts usually recommend FTP clients and provide detailed instructions on FTPing to yuor account - why not ask them... see what they say?

All the best of luck,
Tony

The host has a list of FTP programs. I am just trying each one until I find one I can understand enough to use. SMF isn't supported on this host, so they won't answer SMF-specific questions.

I did have success with 3D-FTP, but I'm not sure all the files uploaded from the unzipped files.

What I'm actually doing is this: I am moving a site from a server where I have no access to the behind-the-scenes stuff to my own webhost. I am using the same theme, same version, everything is the same except I'm now going to a real webhost.

So, knowing that, I shouldn't run into database problems, should I? I'm importing the database from the old site to the new one.

I HIGHLY recommend using Ace FTP! It's just beautiful, and the web graphics match the instructions; first FTP program I've seen that in!

Thanks, Tony!
