SMF Version: SMF 1.0.7
Trying to upgrade to RC2 yesterday and hit difficulties. We have a database of around 100 megs. When doing the upgrade it just kept timing out. Our host suggested upgrading to a dedicated server (no surprise there really)

Anyway, I did hear of a free php script which breaks it all down into smaller chunks then rebuilds after the upgrade. The purpose of this is to reduce the risk of timeouts.

Is there such a script or is this an urban myth? :D

Cheers

Hi,

RC2 upgrades should automatically pause periodically on large tables.
As a suggestion, you could try checking/reducing your log tables as they can become quite large.
How far in to the conversion process do you get? Do you get any errors?

The upgrade progressed to 19.7%,  upgrading the messages table

Trying it with firefox after a while it would pop up with a download box and ask to open or save upgrade.php. I would just press cancel and then click the continue button, after a while the same thing would happen, but never any further progression.

Tried with IE would get to the same position then eventually page not found would come up.

I remember when we upgraded from Yabb to smf we had some problems. The host increased our disk space while we were upgrading and that seemed to work.

My last comment to my host was - So you are saying you can't do anything to assist in the upgrade?

There reply - Unlike weekdays we can only assist with critical server issues or failures during weekends. With this issue we do not see as critical.

We can also help fine tune with dedicated or vps servers, such as upgrading apache, mysql, etc. There you would also have ssh access to have greater control on the server.

Our board uses about 7-10 gig a month which I don't think is excessive for a standard hosted site

Not sure if anyone has had similar issues with the software or it is a case of changing hosts.
