full length left column

I am working on a new forum for my site and would like the page to have a full length left column for menus, ads and etc...  Can anyone help me with the coding I need to make this happen?  I cant seem to do it...

try using a portal system like YAP or Tinyportal

I looked at the tinyportal thing and it wont work with the classic theme (or I dont know how to make it work), and I dont see how to download and install the YAP stuff...  Can you help me?

for yap just download and install via package manager, for Tinyportal its just the same

ok, i went to package manager and cant find either of those...

I downloaded tinyportal...now how do I get it into the package manager to install it?
