The trouble started with a spontaneous corruption of files that caused a template parse error.  I was running RC1 and since that was no longer available for download I tried the RC2 upgrader.  I continually received the "old language files" on update.php.  I use Filezilla for FTP, it was recommended by someone on here.  It is set to overwrite files.  I have double checked this.

I tried restoring.  Now I get this:

Unknown column 'lb.ID_MSG' in 'field list'
File: /home/distinc/public_html/Sources/BoardIndex.php
Line: 83

Note: It appears that your database may require an upgrade. Your forum's files are currently at version SMF 1.1 RC2, while your database is at version 1.1 RC1. The above error might possibly go away if you execute the latest version of upgrade.php.

I resorted to using Fantastico on my server to "downgrade" to 1.0.5 which still didn't work and I still received the template parse error.

So I ran the upgrade again.  Now I get a CHMOD error stating that the server can access the upgrade.php file.  I changed the permissions to 777 and still the same error.

I don't get it.  What I am doing wrong?

I would be more than happy to grant access to a mod who can help with this.  The site has been down for 3 days now and I am just making this worse every time I lay a keystroke on it.

ya, this doesn't sound like a fun situtation.
You can't downgrade, which is one problem.

What you will have to do is download version rc2 update. Upload all the files then run upgrade.php. This should fix your database problem.

Also, rc1 can be found here:

Okay, this afternoon I redownloaded RC2 just in case there was something off with the version I had.  Then I reuploaded it file by file, making sure everything was showing a 7/29 date.

I am still getting the "old language files" error when I run upgrade.php and the forum is showing that it is running RC2 on the bottom, but I also have this error:

Unknown column 'lb.ID_MSG' in 'field list'
File: /home/distinc/public_html/Sources/BoardIndex.php
Line: 83

I am baffled.

Would I be better off to upload the RC2 full install?  Instead of the upgrade?  The upgrade isn't working, I can't seem to get past the language files issue and database error.

I would try that. Hope you have been faithful in backing up your database. A lot of things can be fixed in phpmyadmin. You might have to do some disgusting dissections lol

Since your files are  mess, I would also suggest renaming the forum directory, then installing the new SMF in a new dir with the old name (and same database name and prefix). You can salvage images and stuff from the old one after, if there is anything special.

did you also verify file size?

Language files changed between RC1 and RC2 I believe. Back up the files you have now and the DB. Erase the files, upload the full rc2 package, then the update.php and .sql files from the RC2 update package. Restore your old Settings.php file. Once all that is there, run update.php.
