Hello everyone.

Wanted to say nice BB before I ruin everyones day! ;D

Problem:

I have uploaded SMF 1.07 to my awardspace.  Installation appeared to be seemless. I can get roam around the site and pages load etc.  However when I attempt to create a new topic or Edit Features and Options as well as Manage Boards, Edit Member Group, View Delete Members thats it I think. I get this:

Begin Error Message

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[freeos.awardspace.com] [Sat Jul 29 14:42:58 2006] [error] [client 81.153.188.170] Premature end of script headers: index.php | (null) , referer: hxxp:freeos.awardspace.com/index.php?action=admin [nonactive]
Error 500: Script Execution Failure
Description: The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Most common reasons for returning this error message are:

• File Upload Mode
When you upload Perl, CGI scripts via FTP you should use always ASCII mode. If you get "Error 500: Script Execution Failure" you should check whether your FTP client uses ASCII mode when uploading your scripts, because if it uses BINARY mode to upload your scripts they won't work on the server. The problem caused by wrong upload mode is associated with the way different operating systems handle the "end of line" character. Unix system uses a "line-feed" (LF), Windows uses a "carriage-return" (CR) and "line-feed" (LF) pair. That's why it is very important that you set the uploading mode to ASCII.

• File Permissions
When you upload scripts via FTP the file permissions are set by default to 755. If you get "Error 500: Script Execution Failure" you should check whether your scripts have 755 permissions. Otherwise your scripts have lower level of permissions and does not support execution upon request. The octal representation of the 755 permission is equal to the following textual format: -rwxr-xr-x
Most FTP clients support the CHMOD command which is used for setting file permissions. In case you have set improper permissions to your scripts, use your FTP client and set "Read, Write, Execute" permissions for the owner, "Read, Execute" permissions for the group and everyone else.

• Script Errors
This is the third well known reason for getting "Error 500: Script Execution Failure" upon execution of your scripts. Check your scripts for any obvious syntax or programming errors to make sure your code is not broken.

Remember: When you get a "Error 500: Script Execution Failure", you should always check for any file uploading problems (ASCII/BINARY) and the executable permission settings. Once those are checked and verified, it looks like there is a syntax error or some other problem in the script.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

End of error.

The space provider says upload everything as ascii and set files requiring chmod 777 to 755 instead.

I have done all of this and I am still given the same internal server error 500.

If any one can help it would be appreciated.  Software details below.

Feature Information
Hosting OS Proprietary *nix
PHP version 4.4.1
Perl version 5.8.4
MySQL version 4.0.24
MySQL hostname hxxp:db5.awardspace.com [nonactive]
Perl path /usr/bin/perl

Hope all this makes sense.  Hope some one and come to the rescue! any help is appreciated.

Regards

Double check that ALL permissions are correct.

Here is another common problem.  If you ftp alot of files at once, sometimes one or two files will get left out. Check and make sure ALL of the files were uploaded to your site.

Hello :)

Well I have now attempted to instal SMF on my awardspace 6 or 7 times I am loosing count.  I have followed the advise of the last poster who suggested checking my permissions again and checking that all the files have been uploaded.

So I completely removed my entire installation directory and using awardspace own file manager created and uploaded each file for SMF one at a time which took me a good 3 hours, i then went through the process of checking every single file permission and those which needed CHMOD 777 I set to CHMOD 755 "this is awardspace advise" I am still uncurtain as to weather it will actually work using 755 but according to awardspace I can not set them to 777 why? I do not know.

Well after several hours! I then made sure I had a database ready for the installer, I ran the installer and everything went wonderfully the whole proceedure taking a couple of minutes.

After this I log in and yes I get the main page and then...... >:( I have exactly the same problems as my previous post.... I get exactly the same server 500 errors.

Please I have been at this for a week, I don't mean a couple of hours a day I mean from 9 am until 1/2 am every morning for a week.  So if anyone out there has the answer to my problem I would really, really appreciate the help before I go completely dotty!

I would also "even though it was good advise" really appreciate it if no one told me to check my permissions and files again.." Trust me I have been a systems manager for 25 years now! and when I say I have checked the files and permissions "I really really really really have."

Thanks for the help so far and any further help would be really appreciated.  Seriously I think my wife is looking for a devorce!

Very best regards

ok, i don't want to piss you off, but are all the file sizes the same?
i have had files only partially upload.
also a look at phpinfo may help.
keep smiling, they'll always wonder what your up too.....

yogiman_uk

Hi thanks for getting back to me.

You asked if the file sizes are all the same size. From what I can see the answer is no, not one of the files uploaded using either the awardspace file manager or simpleftp are the same size there a small differentials with all of them.  Looking at the the contents they all look exactly the same? what does that mean, does it make a difference and can it be fixed if it does?

You asked me to create the phpinfo.php and put it on my site so you could see the details.

hxxp:freeos.awardspace.com/phpinfo.php [nonactive]

Hope I have done this how you wanted.

Thanks again for the help!!

Hi

Just an additional note: I am told by awardspace that the small differencial I am seeing in the files sizes is due to the difference between LF and CR due to me transfering from a windows platform to a unix/linux platform!

hi there, i noticed you have register_globals on in your phpinfo, this may be causing a problem.
Lainaathe difference between LF and CR
i don't know what you mean by LF and CR.
Lainaatransferring from a windows platform to a unix/linux platform
does this mean transferring from a computer with a windows operating system like XP or Win98 to a linux server?

i mentioned file size cause i recently updated another members forums and a lot of the file sizes didn't match, this happened because they didn't upload all the way, i had to visually compare sizes and when i found one that didn't match, i re uploaded the file till they matched. there forums now run nicely.

sorry i couldn't be more helpful or specific to your problem.
keep smiling, they'll always wonder what your up too.....

Sorry that was a bad interpretation on my part.

They said:

if only a few bytes
and ASCII upload mode
then it is just normal.

ASCII mode upload will automatically convert windows type newlines
into Unix newlines.
windows type use 2 bytes to tell 'Newline', while unix type uses only 1 byte.
BINARY upload, will keep every file, as it is.
Like in all graphics, jpg gif - there should be no difference in file size.

And if uploading a text based file, like .php .html .sql
in Windows format to Unix usong BINARY, the newlines marker wont work
- the script can get corrupt and show:
500 Script Execution / Internal server error

So I assume the differential is normal.

Regarding, "register_globals" this is something I have no control over it is determined by awardspace I think unless you can tell me different.

Apparently other people have this working on awardspace.. I am told I have not actually seen this in action.

would of been worth more if some kinda progress had been made. :(

Regardless of any progress, I have learned a little and you have helped a lot.  I just like to know that for all your efforts it is very much appreciated and understood that you don't have to do this, you choose too.

Thank you!
