How to update just DB info ?

I've got SMF version 1.0.1 on old server1
I installed on new server2 SMF version 1.2 RC2

Is it possible to copy just SQL info from old forum (server1) to new one (server2) ? 
I'dont need to copy new pages... just Database information....

Or should I'll install backup of version 1.0.1, then upgrade one to version 1.2 RC2 ?

Personally I would play safe.
Upgrade and the export/import the data for RC2 install.
