SMF Version: SMF 1.1 RC2
This may be simple, but I'm not sure.  For ssi_login, I'd like a simple link instead of a button for people to press.

Do you mean just a link to the login page?
You could just use HTML for that like this:

<a href="http://www.yourdomain.com/forum/index.php?action=login>Login</a>

And maybe put that in a if ($context['user']['is_logged']) PHP statement so it won't show unless the user isn't logged in.

Not a link to the login page, the actual action of logging someone in.  Instead of it being a button that submits the form information, how about just a link.

Or is there a way that I can change the look of the button?

In order to do this you will need to use javascript so that the button could be a link instead of a form.
