SMF Version: 1.0.7

Okay, here is the story... Our group was forced to move in a very short amount of time and I ended up the admin for the site & forum.  Web site stuff I understand, this smf and DB stuff is all Greek to me.  Just before my old stuff was deleted form the old server, I managed to back the DB and tables and have a file named

onthe4_ACW-complete_2006-08-10.sql.gz

now I have the new server and a clean install of the SMF forum.  So how to I restore all my users, tables, etc?  Please help in as plain of language, and step by step as possible.  I am desperate to get it all back up and running.  Thanks.

Okay, some steps:

  • Download SMF 1.0.7 and go through the installer. It will get your files all set up like they need to be.
  • Take that db backup and use a tool like phpMyAdmin to import it into your SMF database.
  • Since you moved hosting, your db will have incorrect paths. Run the Repair Settings tool to go through and fix this
  • In the SMF admin area, run the Recount tool

If all goes well, the forums will be back up.

I know how to get to phpadmin through my host cPanel, but can you explain these steps a bit more for me... how do I get my DB imported...

When I import the DB, I get the following error message in myphpadmin:
Error
SQL query:

INSERT INTO `smf_instant_messages` (

`ID_PM` ,
`ID_MEMBER_FROM` ,
`deletedBySender` ,
`fromName` ,
`msgtime` ,
`subject` ,
`body`
)
VALUES # --------------------------------------------------------
#
# Table structure for table `smf_log_actions`
#

DROP TABLE IF EXISTS `smf_log_actions` ;

#1064 - You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near 'DROP TABLE IF EXISTS `smf_log_actions`' at line 5

am I on the right track?

You are on the right track, but I don't know about that backup file. If that is the actual error, it looks like the backup is either corrupted, or didn't get parsed properly by phpMyAdmin.

That is the actual error.  So what you think is that hte backup did not actually work properly?  It was completed from the admin section of the forum, not phpmyadmin

The lines above being:

VALUES # --------------------------------------------------------
#

are definately a problem. Can you check and see if the .sql file actually is broken in that way?

I am not sure what you mean by check, I copied the exact error to this thread.  I might have an old copy of the entire site... but can I extract the forum?

Look at the .sql file backup and see if that line does exist.

It looks like it exists at the end of every table section.  I opened the file in notepad, and that string exists after each section.  Can I send you the file to look at it?  I have email functioning...

青山 素子

If you want, you can. I'm guessing right now that the backup is broken. PM me for my e-mail (or post somewhere and pm the link). Do NOT post a link on this thread.

I can't believe this, I can not get the attachment to email...  How many more problems will this forum cause me...  >:(

Any ideas on what I can do?  or should we start over?
