No, its not that I am not appreciateive of SMF and all the time people have put into it, its the lack of ease it takes to customise the bloody thing. I want to do what should be simple but have spent ages trying to find out and have had no sucsess.

I want to insert a non frame section at the top of the forum. I want to use drop down dhtml menus and want to be able to have it as a seperate html page that I can edit in a wysiwyg editor.
Surely SMF could have been better desigend to enable easy to edit top section of the forum, instead of having to pick through weird index.template html/php

Its not phucking straight forward and its should be :)

How can I stick something like this http://www.machsupport.com/bennyssh!t/test.php at the top of this http://machsupport.com/forum/index.php

Well, if a great many people have mastered changing the templates, I see no reason why you shouldn't learn it too. ;) The reason they are like this are many, but the main reasons are speed, power and customisation.

If you actually want to use an iframe, make all your links in the menu have target="_parent" in them and the links will break out of the iframe and not just load the page in the iframe.

For the include, I really don't know how to do it or where you'd want it in the template file.
The real hell is your life gone wrong.

I tried the first method in the other thread but got a load of error messages.
I tried your little script and got a load of error messages.
I triead all sorts of experiments etc. ( Near to tears now)

I am feeling kinda dumb, at the moment.

I tried exactly what you last said and moved the test.php to the same directory.
But I keep getting error messages.
One of then says cannot find test.php even though its in the same directory.

I still want to hit someone. Surely SMF should come with a seperate header setup where we could use wysiwyg editors with it.
