Moderator notes about users

I know that in vB, moderators can make notes about a user so that other mods can see them.

This is really useful for reminding mods about certain user behavior. For example, if a user has been warned previously about spamming, or for using foul language.... or whatever, this can help ensure that much more fair decisions can be taken by moderators in the future.

Of course this feature could be use for positive things also, like "this user is really switched on, perhaps we could ask him/her to be a moderator in the future".

At the moment this kind of user note is only possible when a user is banned.

Any thoughts?

Some may find this bloat but I quite like the idea.

A user note field and maybe automatically list previous bans which have expired.

I see a point, though creating a special board just for admins and moderators serves the same purpose and might be an easier way to communicate. I like it more as a modrequest.

Why not show only to some selected groups (Admins, SuperMods, and another moderations ranks) some information on the user profile about that?

I think that is nicier :)

SMF 7 is where it gets good. That has time travel. You can go back and post before the guy who flamed you. :P

Thanks for the comments.

I agree, it does serve the same purpose. But for any board with more than a few hundred members, it's going to be very hard to remember anything about specific users. It's also more effort for mods to post messages and for other mods to trackusers and comments about them.

Whereas if there is a "User Admin Comments" button, it means that everyone can get treated far more fairly. For example currently, if you spot that a certain user has been posting comments that are generally against forum rules, it is impossible to tell if they are a 'repeat offender'. Especially if they don't come to the forum very often, or if moderators have changed recently. But a quick check under their "User Admin Comments" field (or whatever it would be called), might show that they have been warned about this twice before. On the other hand, perhaps they have been given permission, in the past, to post certain messages for whatever reason.

I like that idea. Perhaps there could be an option when a moderator carried out an action, such as deleting a post from a user, to make a comment in the users profile.
