Are more than one MySQL DB's possible?

I'm in the process of migrating a forum to smf, and I was wondering if:

a) I could have the old mysql db accessible as reference, but use the new one that is set up as the new primary db?

b) where I can find out about migrating mysql db from other forums to smf
