prefix inconsistencies

I have two SMF forums, one holds its images with a http://domainname... prefix the other requires a http://ww.domainname... prefix or it drops the images. A mystery... anyone able to offer any answers/explanations?

It might also be that some domains/servers can be accessed through both www.domain.ext and domain.ext while others only work with www. I think its more a hosts issue.
