Howdy.  I'm new here, so PLEASE excuse if this is a stupid question that is already answered in 57 other places.  I tried various searches, but did not find much for people having my problem, which is basically that the install ran FINE (database created, rights apparently set correctly, paths set, my user account created...), but when I try to go to the forum, I get a blank page with the word:

index

Nothing else.  No clues, no errors, no problems during installation.  It just doesn't DO anything except show me that one word when I run index.php.

What did I mess up?

I've seen it before, try re-uploading all the files again since it might even be a language file problems :P

Actually, I've seen problems like this with other site add-on's too, but I've never run into any add-on that appears to be so darned EASY to install!

The problem is, if it doesn't work, I have nothing to CHECK to see what went wrong.

For example, a couple of years ago when I installed YaBB, it would ONLY work if I uploaded SOME files in ASCII mode and some other files in BINARY mode.

I saw no instructions whatsover about that for SMF.  Does it matter?  I actually did not use an FTP client at all to send the files earlier today.  Just opened up an ftp session in Internet Explorer and drag and dropped them.  That COULD be the problem!

Internet Explorer doesn't really apply them, try reuploading via a program named Filezilla which is free to download online :P

Filezilla will make it easier to CHMOD

So far, I have not seen any instructions as to what values I need to CHMOD the files TO.  Is there a doc somewhere that gives a few more technical details?  Seems like this system is designed so the installer will do everything FOR you, so no information is given about how its supposed to be set up "under the hood".

That's FANTASTIC, as long as the automatic utility WORKS.  In my case, I'm left scratching my head wondering what to do NEXT.

Will reupload using Filezilla.

EGAD!!  Thanks JJ.  Re-uploading using Filezilla fixed the problem immediately.

Hey!  I have an SMF forum.

Thanks again,
Jim
