Adding two functions to the menu bar

I have a theme based on the default, and a couple of users have asked whether we could add two buttons to the menu bar, one to show unread posts and one to show new replies.  I have some idea where this should go, but my limited knowledge/understanding of PHP is making it hard for me to do this on my own.

If you've done this, could you please share your code?
