How to safely upgrade from RC2 -> RC3

Hi,

I am thinking about moving on to RC3, I currently use SMF 1.1. RC2 with Tiny Portal 0.8.6 and various other mods.

Seeing the huge number of errors, problems, complains...etc. about upgrading, I am actually pretty 'afraid' to just download and execute the upgrade script.

How would you upgrade it safely?

I wouldn't mind if the mods are all deleted, in fact, i want them to be deleted to make a safe start. I have over 68 of them installed and some mods like the Links mod or Tiny Portal left some MySQL as well...

So, my plan was to download a fresh copy of 1.1RC2 and somehow import the current database cleanly into it, which will be all done in a different folder to keep the current board alive. Then, I would execute the upgrade script. After that, I will re-install the necessary mods, and run the repair tool once everything is finished (so that it can go to the main domain)...but...

How would you import this database?

I mean, how can you import it + getting rid of those ones left by the mods? Or does the upgrade script clear that up for you?

Also, how about avatars & attachments? How will you get those to work wih RC3 (and my plan)?

Any other suggestions welcomed,

BoA.

Read this will help you out:

To import a back, you will need to use phpmyadmin.
Avatars and attachments won't be lost in the upgrade.
Mods that leave mysql tables wont get deleted in the upgrade. To saftly remove the tables that mods have left behind, it would be best to contact the mod creator.
Just remember to have anything backuped.

Well, I just need the old database to be converted back to 1.1RC3...

Is a RC2 database incompatible with RC3?

I did the following:

1. Make a temporary folder called "rc3" and put a fresh copy of RC2 + a new database.

2. Export the old database via phpMyadmin

3. Import the old database via phpMyadmin which failed because the same database already 'exists'.

I wouldn't dare to directly execute the upgrade the script from what I see here, it will only totally mess up my board, which is very heavily modified.

I have got to import my old database back.

I have two options left:

Either do that in a free host (and copy back everything from there) OR simply convert it to phpBB and reconvert to SMF, then apply the update.

Or maybe just stck with phpBB3 but I prefer SMF.;)
