PHP version difficulty

My server will not give me permission to use the PHP extention in SMF 1.0.8. They have imformed me that my PHP files need to be compatible with PHP version 4.1.2. Any higher or newer versions conflict with the server.

Is there another version of SMF I can download, or is it time to find a new server?

If your host is running such an outdated version of PHP, it is definitely time to move to a better host.  There have been a few vulnerabilities reported with older versions.  Your host needs to upgrade.
