custom login module for J!

I want to modify the mod_smf_login module for the smf bridge to Joomla (the one from Joomlahacks). Specifically, I would like to show the number of posts and forum status (i.e. newbie) to be displayed once a user is logged in just next to the avatar pic. Looking at the existing module, it looks like i need to get the variable from smf with a $params->get call, then place that new variable in the module.

Any help would be appreciated.
