SMF Version: SMF 1.0.8
Hello.

What I'm wanting to do is setup a forum on the school intranet. The purpose of this is a help desk, type thing. I'm running Fedora Core 4 LTSP. Is it possable to set up the forum on the server, so it can be accessed from the clients and not the internet?

I have MySQL installed, however I'm not sure how to install PHP.

BTW: This forum in to be locally hosted, when replying please don't even let the internet creep into your mind.

Thanks for any help you may have.

This is more of a server question rather than an SMF question - as once the server is set up properly, and you block access from the outside of your network to your server using a firewall, you can install pretty much anything on it.

The best option would probably be to get an RPM of PHP, and (assuming you're using Apache) install and activate mod_php5 (or mod_php4 depending on which version of PHP you are getting obviously).

Once you are sure that your server meets the minimum SMF requirements, and you have double(triple/quadruple...)-checked that nobody outside of your network is able to access your server, then you should install SMF.

Okay thanks.

Is there an easy to follow guide for setting up SMF on a sever, that involves all the neccisary steps? I'm not too good with linux so this would really help me.

Thanks, but that guide doesn't hepl me set the forum up on my own phyisical sever, so that it doesn't connect to the internet. Is this possable?

Dannii

It won't need to connect to the install. There is an option (can't remember exactly what it is called) to turn off getting data from sm.org in the admin panel, but you do that after installing SMF.

Here's a nice 'how to' guide for setting up on-sight servers:

Keep in mind that FC-4 has been transfered to legacy, so be sure to see this page:

Is this for setting up a linux server, or for setting it up with all the nedded packages for a forum. I couldn't find anything on the site so could you please give me a direct link?

What specifically is the problem?

Setting the forum up on the server. Because I can't upload the files to anything as the server is not online I'm not sure how to install the forum.

Dannii

Well just copy them over your local network. You don't need to use FTP if you have local access ;)

What you have to do is put the files in the directory that you setup for apache.  This dir is usually named htdocs, public_html or www.

When you reinstall Apache make a note as to what your httpdocs folder is.
