Hello all,

I have been running SMF 1.1rc2 for a while with no issues (that I have noticed). I recently saw the notice about the security upgrade and the 1.1rc3 upgrade so I thought I'd get both and upgrade. I did, but after upgrading, some of the mods I use seemed to be there and most were not there. The ones not there (based on the fact the buttons in my profile were no longer there) were listed in the packages installed section but listed as not installed. So, I realized I would have to reinstall those mods. That became a nightmare so I decided to go back to v1.1rc2. I have been reading on the forum that when upgrading, mods have to be reinstalled. Isn't there ANY way an upgrade can be applied WITHOUT having to uninstall/install the mods? Rather than using upgrade.php to do the upgrade, can't I just copy the files from the Sources dir into my existing forum? I am assuming that if I also copy the new THEMES dir I will be overwriting my current theme and losing my mods. Will this method work? any ideas or suggestion would be helpful. I find it very "unfriendly" to have to reinstall all the mods I use everytime there is an update/upgrade. Seems like there should be a way to upgrade smf without losing mods.....

Thanks

Mods change the SMF code. Upgrading will erase those changes, even just copying the new files (that action is what removes the mods). If the mods installed cleanly the last time, you should just be able to install them again. In fact, it is highly recommended to uninstall mods before upgrading. Most well-behaved mods will keep the data across making these changes.

Also, only the default themes are included, so any extra themes you installed will not be touched. Re-installing the mods should update the default themes.

Well, the problem I have is that I recently lost a 120gig hard drive where I stored a lot of the information I use to setup the mods...i.e.......ads mod info, paypal mod info, google member map info etc. and if I have to uninstall and reinstall all my mods I am concerned I will not remeber the info and no longer be able to use those mods.

It just seems like there should be a better way to upgrade the forum so something like that isn't an issue. I realize we are talking about changes to html/javascript etc and those changes need to be made as well. But, as I said, seems like there has to be a better way when upgrading.

Thanks for the reply. I am considering whether or not I want to make the upgrade and HOPEFULLY remember the mod info that will be wiped out.
