SMF Version: SMF 1.1 RC3
I might have a little problem. I 'm trying to install a package and/or a theme and it just can't be done. I suppose my server runs in safe mode cause everything else is ok. Is there anything i can do rathr than install the packages manually?

J. Williams

Nope, you will need to get your host to disable safe mode or make a temp directory in packages :D

Finally, i don't think my localhost runs in safe mod. I cannot even upload a thing! When I click on browse to upload a package using the Package Manager and then click upload i get an error by Vdeck saying:

403 forbidden

Server configuration does not allow access to this page. Please go back and try again.

I don't get it. Please help. I' m going desperate as i checked everything and seems ok. Permissions are fine! Any ideas?

have you tried doing a chmod 777 on the Package folder and a file inside that folder called installed.list?

It' allright now. Seems like a host problem. They fixed it though. I haven't been told yet what it was all about. If so i will let you know.

I keep getting
Lainaa"Some of the files the package manager needs to modify are not writable. This needs to be changed by logging into FTP and using it to chmod or create the files and folders. Your FTP information may be temporarily cached for proper operation of the package manager.

530 Authentication failed, sorry"

I've followed some of the steps mentioned, but can't seem to get it worked out..

青山 素子

That 530 error usually indicates your ftp login information is wrong. Did you make sure everythign was typed correctly?

I just upgraded my site from RC2 to RC3.  When ever I try to install packages, it appears as though they are going to install fine, but yet, the changes do not take effect!

I compared all my security, and have tried multiple things from other threads here (temp directory, phpinfo(), FTP path, 777 permissions, even setting the file and group owners to root instead of nobody.

As far as I can tell, the files are not being modified, however, I see backup files being created with the current time stamp.

What am I missing?  Thanks.

Are you checking on the core theme?

It's obvious that this RC3 is not ready for prime time, simple machines is really hurting the strong image of trouble free operation that had been created by this action and should immediately send out a functioning version.

[partial sarcasm]Since you know so much about the problem, you are welcome to find the bugs and send in patches to the development team. If they work well, I'm sure they will be integrated and you might even wind up as a member of the developer team.[/partial sarcasm]

Seriously, the patch suggestion stands. If you find a bug, please help fix it so everyone can benefit. That being said, most of the problems I see on here are related to a strange configuration of the server, or a forum configuration. With server hosts adding on extra complexity (mod_security, misconfigured safe mode, weird php mail configs), it isn't easy to test every edge case nor to keep in mind how exactly to fix it. You can look at the complaints and add up who is hosting the sites with problems if you want to see a pattern.

SMF works wonderfully on a well-configured server. I have a few instances I use for testing issues on a server I control, and the default setup _always_ works with no tweaking. I know many other places that work fine. (I also manage boards on 1&1 and PowWeb that work great.)

Is it no longer called Default?

The official entry says "SMF Default Theme - Core". The old 1.0 default is called "Babylon" on 1.1. I call the 1.1 default just "core" because it is an easy thing to look for on your theme list (and avoids confusion with the 1.0 "default" of Babylon).

I'll be the first to admit, that I don't know everything there is to know about server configurations.

Since I'm running Apache and Sendmail on Linux, is there somplace that I can go to for a good vanilla server configuration.

I'm more than willing to admit that I, personally may have botched something up when configuring my server.

Thanks!

I'm not sure on Sendmail (I normally use Postfix), but Apache and PHP are fairly easy to get default config files for. Apache usually installs an http.conf.default that has the original configuration in it. PHP comes with a php.ini-dist and php.ini-recommended in the source code package.

Since you seem to have shell access to the server, you can probably check if the files are being modified at all. Those files with a ~ on the end are the original copies before the latest mod install. You can run the diff command between them and the current copy to see the changes. Don't try re-installing a mod, the changes might be there already, and it is possible no changes will be made then.

Using diff:
diff -u oldfile1~ newfile1

The - lines are lines deleted in the second file, and + are added. Remember that for theme changes, it is best to check in Themes/default for changed files.

One thing I did notice is that the file dates didn't seem to change as I was attemping to apply mods.  I'm not sure what the problem may be at this point, since everything was changed to 777, user and group is set as roor, I even logged in as root and still no dice.  I verified that mod_securty was turned off also.
