Subscribe to a thread (request)

I used to use Invision Board and you could "subscribe" to a thread and receive emails of new posts without having to actually post.  This is very useful!  Is there any way to do this?  Even on this board when I see a mod discussion I would like to follow as it developes it would be nice to just click a button rather than having to post some dumb reply that just takes up room on the board.

Notify will email a notification, but in vBulletin you have the option to view all subscribed threads to see if there is any activity.

That's what I would like to see in SMF or in a Mod.
