Adding header image and moving the 'log in' area

Hi all, I'm using the default theme and trying to customize it. I want to add a banner image across the top in the space that currently has the website title and SMF logo at the top. But everytime I try to replace the logo it just disorts the page off to the side. I want the banner image to be centered.

I also want to move the "Welcome, Guest. Please login or register." box to below the Navigation menu and off to the right side. In it's place below the header image I want to put a welcome message for the forum.

Can somone pelase tell me how to do this? Hopefully these are simple fixes. I'd appreciate any help.
