1. Want a category with a general area (annoucements, news, etc.) that all can read -- registered or not -- but not post.

2.  Then want to a category or two for all who register onsite with permissions to view and post.

3.  And lastly a category limited to clients joining my membership based web-site to view and post. This section will need approval before activated and will be able to view & post in the category (2) above.

Is this possible?  Have no idea how to set the permissions.  Have a confused you too much?   :D

I am a relative newbie so my explanation may not be articulate but I do have these features implemented on my forum.

I have a welcome/announcement area that is viewable by anyone including unregistered guests.  The rest of the forum requires registration to view.  I did this through setting permissions on each board.  (admin, set permissions).

On the boards that require registration I removed the checkmark next to "unregistered guests".

I also have boards that require a certain amount of posts to view but since you didn't ask about that specifically I won't cover it.  If you're interested PM.   ;)

As for item #3,...i set up member groups for those who I will appove for access into private forums.  They have to discuss with me personally and I add them to the membergroup that will allow access to my private forums.  I set up a membergroup for XYZ Discussion Board, ABC Discussion Board and PDQ Discussion Board.  Then as members qualify and are approved I change their membership to the corresponding board they are to access.

If,...

I want to allow member to have access to more than one private board I have yet another membergroup that grants access to XYZ and ABC boards for instance.  When you get into combinations of private boards to be accessed it can add up to several but I needed it to be this way because of the topics of my private boards.

If you don't understand maybe someone else can explain better.  Or,..maybe they have a better way.  if no one replies and you need clarification you can PM me.   ;)

This newbie is so proud.  I just helped my first fellow newbie.  I must be learning!

Steph,
Thanks for the reply -- you do NOT sound like a newbie!!!  I'm running 1.0.7 like you so I should be able to work out what I want to accomplish.

Thanks for your detailed and understandable reply -- you are a GREAT help!  If I run into trouble, I'm hollar.

Again thanks!

I would upgrade to 1.0.8 since it fixes a hole that was in php depending on your webhost if they have updated php version.

I've experience with PHPBB Admin and now am trying SMF Admin for the first time.  My attention was brought to SMF because hxxp:godaddy.com [nonactive] offers one-click setup for it, and with their huge space I didn't hesitate to experiment.  I very much like what I'm finding about SMF so far.

I too need closed areas, but akin to conference rooms where assorted members and staff may meet in any combination.  I need the non-members to not see the closed conferences.

I went through Admin pages and haven't found simple user-per-group editing.  I'll look again, as I probably blindly went by it.  I'd be grateful for any insights into setting up groups with private rooms.

Make a group for each of the private 'rooms'/boards and only give that group access to the board. Then add anyone you want to have access to the board to that group.

Creating the group and the board and associating those presented no problem.

I have just found the individual permission at Modify_Profile/Account_Related_Settings which ideed I had overlooked several times before.

Thank you very much for your quick and helpful response!
