I think it would be nice to see something like this [nofollow] as an addon for SMF.  Basically it's a forum "user" that is really an artificially intelligent bot that posts intellegent dynamic responces.  Would it be that difficult to port the IPB version to SMF? It uses AIML and mysql, I think.

What do you think?

Tom

I think it could abuse my users a bit.  :)

It's kinda neat.

damo1065

I've been looking through the forum and observing how Heidi works....is it actually real?
The auto bot has some of the greatest AI ever seen!!!

Surely it's a fake....if it's not then I am gasping in amazement

it's real! another one is in the Off Topic section of the dealtaker forum ( http://forums.dealtaker.com/invision/index.php?showforum=10 [nofollow] ). (have to be registered to see it unfortunetly)

the responce time alone shows it's for real

The AI is driven by AIML ( http://www.alicebot.org/ [nofollow] )

I just wish someone would port the IPB AI bot to SMF.

damo1065

Yeah I've had my conversation with the bot....I am absolutley gobsmacked by it to be honest. I've never seen anything like that before (I am only new to the whole net world..but still).
It's capabilities are amazing....

Now I want one for SMF lol

As soon as some PHP guru ports the IPB version to SMF we should be all set.  Anyone feel like doing it? (I'm sorry I have no skills to offer in return, I guess the community as a whole would benefit)

Skoen

I believe this could be an optional addon that would work regardless of SMF upgrades. An optional addon/mod instead of a real feature that is included in SMF. But, yeah, seems like a cool thing :)

This of course would be a mod and not an official SMF feature.

Never thought of it otherwise ;)

Wow, I was so awed by this I modified my board to add this. I wonder how many people I can get to think that it's a real person. ::)

Chris Cromer

Well it's going over well... 500 posts of my members trying to confuse the bot, make it stupider, and make it contradict itself. :P

Although I liked the first posts better when they thought it was a real person...

Btw. the whole Alicebot idea came up ages ago on the phpBB-Community... http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=24191 ;D There were quite some interesting posts on phpBB regarding that topic....

CompSurfer

Now, Chris Cromer, you said you were able to use this for SMF?  I wish it could be made into a package that could be installed easily into SMF.

Chris Cromer

I said I was able to impliment this on my board... not that I implimented it on SMF.

But now that I know how ALICE works from playing around with it, I "could" make a mod for SMF. Remember I said "could" not "will", I have not decided whether or not yet I will make a mod. I will think about it... but is anybody planning on writing this mod or has already started? Wouldn't want to decide yes and start just to have someone else do it. :P

I guess since no one has stepped up and said they were porting it to SMF it's up for grabs still.

I'm begging.  :8

We use an AIML bot in our chat room, and soon he'll be embedded into our FAQ page with flash.  :)

I'd LOVE to have the ability to deploy him to the Forum too:

You can talk to him in our chat room to get a sense of how smart these bots are:
http://www.algoredemocrats.com/chat/ [nofollow]

And this is a reasonably new bot, he'll be an expert on all the topics relevant to our site within a month or two of learning and programming.

Help me get him into the Forums (we use SMF boards obviously)!  Your country needs you.  ;D

Trekkie101

Hell yeah id love to see this  in SMF, if i could write in php i would write it.

I looked at it in the mean time but integrating it seems a bit harder I cant seem to even find the right files.

i havent looked at any code relating to this but...
Sources\Post.php should be at least one file needed to modify

and make new file that Post.php wil call if it is posted in board that 'Alice' uses to chat with others

This is DEFINITELY one for the Experts! :) Chances are why it's not done yet, those that can are too busy with more important things, and those that have the time, don't have the skill.

Trekkie101

Actually one apporach i didnt take was look at the phpBB code and see how it was sdone there but It is for experts thats for sure, the sad fact is I spend huge ammounts of time on TrueBasic and that isnt the best language, I wish i could donate all the hours of work on that into php and try and do something.

Actually I would love to have this as an addon or mod.

I had an Alicebot on my forum when I ran Invision 1.3 and it was really great and a lot of fun. I have a basic understanding of the AIML files and have been developing a set that would work on my site.

Simply put if you configure a proper AIML file you have have your AliceBot help people by answering basic questions (think of her as an automatically posting FAQ ;) ) Or you can just have her chat around for the fun of it.

One of the options of the AliceBot for Invision was the ability to answer to her name OR she was limited to post only on certain boards.

I think it would be a great addition.

I can do AIML, its the integration with SMF and the calls to make her work that are the hard part, the AIML is quite logical after a while, automatic support helper, fun friend, infact she could run a forum instead of an admin lol

JRSofty

I've got the files for the PHiliP creation of Alice that could be used for SMF but I'm still getting familiar with SMF and I don't think I could even attempt to write a mod for it.  :'(

this would be bad ass please someone do it  :D

Apnomis

I'm confused, what exactly does this do? None of the linked examples work anymore :(

I've seen chatbots before, but how does this work on a forum? It posts a reply to a posted message? How does it "learn" exactly? And how do you program it in a specialist subject? Seems complicated to me! Like on this forum she would need to be able to answer questions about SMF, on my forum she would need to know about computers!

All seems very difficult to implement to me, but it would be very very very cool, I'd love my forum to have an AI!

ryanbsoftware

it would make posts, by running a query on the db.

I think this would be awsome, it might stimulate some activity on my forum.  Is someone working on this?

JRSofty

I have the actual source code for Program E AKA PHILIP which is the PHP equivalent of ALICE (most of the AI Chatbots are based on PHILIP).

If any one is interested in where to get the source code check here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/programe/

OMG. . .I'm waiting for this as well! Being, I don't know much about how to program, I would like to see this developed on SMF! I was also on an IPB forum when they had this bot, and it was so much fun. This is something I'd like to have on my forum to get more people to chat up a storm ;)

Is anyone still planning on working on this?

Actually the translation could come in the form of XML files added to the bot's database. The Program E bot above can speak English and German and I think there may be others. You would only need to learn the XML format of the files that the program uses and build your own files upload them and then it would speak whatever language you wanted ;)

i'm also interested in it, for sure, but i'm kinda broke at this time. :(
if someone paid you for it, would you release it to the community?

You can have an Alice bot of your own by going to www.tufat.com/script2.htm

It's a great chat addon for forums that uses bots. You can teach (customize) your bot to do lots of things. You can even rename them. The chat itself is very customizable, it integrates into smf (as well as other forums) and has addons for admin, audio/visual, mp3's, webcasting and a help support mode. The chat also uses a set of irc commands but does not connect to any irc server.

As far as I know the bot doesn't actually work within the forum itself but only the chat rooms you create. Check with www.alicebot.org to see of they have plans for forum use.

darkhavoc

Here is the mod for phpbb, maybe this can be converted over.

http://rapidshare.de/files/7245663/forum_ai_0_2_0.zip.html

GC

I'll do it if someone tells me the information for SMF located int he install.php for the mod.

Sheepy

If you mean database & forum location setting you just import it.  That's all.

CRO

I am very curious to see if anyone has worked on this - I know it's been a long time.

I'm an ex-IPB user who had a bot before, and I'd *so* love to put a bot on my SMF, but I would have no clue how to port it over.

I have a copy of the IBF 1.1 AliceBot add on, if someone wants it, to see if they can port it over. I also think PHPbb has an Alice type bot as well.
