Trouble with top banner

Okay, I'm really not good at any of this at all 
I'm messing around with a theme that's the same as the default theme, but I'm adding my own logo and stuff.
The logo shows at the top but it's shifted to the right with a purple blob at the left with my forum name:

How do I get rid of it so only the banner shows?

Okay...
A friend of mine just tried something and now it looks like this O.o

On my computer:

It's a step since the text is gone but how do I get it all properly centered in the right place (not sure how to say it  )
