Stopping SPAMMERS!!!!

I thought of a way to help stop spammers on forums:

Limit the number of different members that a user can PM per day.

If a new user could only PM one member (multiple times) per day that would eliminate the desires of spammers to use forums like this one to spread their filth. The number of members allowed could increased by community involvement, like being a supporting member.

I just got hit with some pretty offensive porn again (on a different forum) and needed to say something.

Thanks for reading :)

This will be added in SMF 1.1 final I believe.
Other ideas is disable personal messages until they have like 10 posts for example.

I still can't believe that's happening it seems like it just the same ip address the entire time.

Yeah, that's a good idea.

I don't think someone needs to send more than 10 messages to members of a board in one single day.

Great to hear it's in the works already 8)

These forums are just such awesome tools. I hate to see them get abused by anybody.

Thanks again!  :)

Well that's part of the problem with popular software.  It becomes popular enough, spammers write code to automate their crap for it.

It's not just private messages problem. I also need to prevent spammers to spam using their signature or web address in profile. In phpBB i modified code so it did not allow new users to fill those fields. I got great impact on spammers, especialy those who register manually just to advertize through profile infomation (their intention is to get links to their web sites).

Alos, setting bbcodes permission could be extended in a manner to alow us to choose if we just disable bbcode or disallow it. Disabled bbcode means bbcode would not be interpreted but would be shown as code. Disallowed, means, forum should not allow user to enter that code at all. That would be great to prevent spammer users entering urls in messages.

Alos, important need is being able to set different bbcode permissions for messages and signature. Signature is often abused and my requirement is to prevent users using [url] and [img] codes in signatures, althrough they coul be allowed to use them in messages.
