CAPTCHA for guest replies

It would be nice if the CAPTCHA feature could be extended to apply to replies as guests. We like to leave this feature (guests can reply to topics) available, but this means that we get hit by spam.

Yes, it's possible, I write a CAPTCHA MOD that does this. Please see http://www.dansoftaustralia.net/products/captcha.dsa
Alternatively, you may want to consider the Akismet Spam Protection MOD. Basically, this uses the Akismet service to tell if a post is spam or not. Please see http://www.dansoftaustralia.net/products/akismet.dsa for that MOD (note that this is the first release, there may be a few bugs in it).

I've contacted the author of the Advanced Visual Verification mod (HarzeM), asking him if he'd let me update it so it supports SMF 1.1.3. If he does, there should be an updated mod available soon

why would you have to 'ask' him? Isnt it 'community property?'

No, the authors remain owners.

As eldacar said, they still retain ownership of all their code.

Anyways, HarzeM gave me permission to do it, and it's coming along well. My local version installs cleanly on SMF 1.1.3, but there's still a few bugs. I won't have time to work on it until Friday.

Wrong!

A captcha is designed to differentiate between humans and bots. Assuming we have a captcha on guest posts, forcing captcha for registered members on quick reply would be more of an annoyance than a help. It wouldn't stop spam (any bot smart enough to register an account is smart enough to go to the regular post form if the quick reply form has a captcha), but it would frustrate legitimate users.

Wouldn't there be a anti-spam system to catch spams on CAPTCHA? I thought it had a spam removal system.

Not for registered members, for guests! They shouldn't have to go to the full post form.
