Well i could use some advice on how to  advertise my site. I know posting on forums and stuff is good. But i culd use other methods. and how to go about it.

Advertise your forum in your signature. This will improve search rankings and people from other forums may visit.

Try and get related forums to link to yours although from my experience it is best not to join webrings, free advertising or big link exchanges.

Namecheap (domains)
Fastmail (e-mail)
Linode (VPS)

Well you could always spend a bit of money and pay for banners on other peoples forums or pay for adwords.

Well, about the cheapest advertising is at MSN. -- You can bid @ 0.05 per click on your link -- you may/may not get clicks at this rate, but hey, it's there.

Next is Yahoo .. (overture) -- minimum CPC is 0.10, once again, you may/may not get clicks, but it's still there... even if it's on page 20.

Finally, Google Adwords. Where you *must* pay a higher amount to be listed at all.

I advertise at Overture and at MSN, but I display Google Ads. I break even on a daily basis. I, too, am looking for ways to push my site(s) (forum, & internet shopping) over the edge.

If you have an instant messenger, in your little "description" part underneath your name you can put your website URL. Also put it as a signature on all your emails.

do you think i could eventually use ads and get enough money from them to pay for the runing of the site?

Panzer-

Yes, almost definately. Donations are always a good option to have as well.

There are people that you can pay to advertise your site around loads of different places somewhere.

It's worked well for me to ask companies that service the same industry as my site if they'd like to buy advertising.

As for getting your name out there... same as any other company... word of mouth.

I'm afraid this comment came off as snooty. Excuse me if it did.

One tangible thing we asked our members when we first started out was to put a little widget on their blog that said "YMX Member." It was in the same style and location as RSS feeds, people didn't seem to mind doing it, and it did help our membership tell their friends about the site without being overt about it.

If you can, start a newsletter. If they are good, they will get forwarded along.

I have found that different webmaster forums can be good for advertising and also they are good for finding different places to advertise.

samames

add links to anyplace you can... It ups ur google ranks.
try searching google for "add link" and u'll find quite a few places, it also helps if they're related to your site "*your forum subject* add link" may be a good idea :D
