Modded YABBSE to SM - advice?

I've just recently upgraded to YABBSE 1.5.4, and have applied some mods. One of these had to be re-applied because it got "lost" when I upgraded.

Then, I started wondering:

How will modded YABBSE boards fair when ported over to the SM platform?

What should YABBSE board users keep in mind when applying mods or otherwise making functional changes to their boards with respect to Simple Machines?

And (if this information is available) what YABBSE "mods" are actually going to be part of SM? For example, there is the Application mod, where potential members register and their information is held for approval.

I just don't want to "hack up" my boards, only to have all those changes lost when ported to SM.

Thanks!

Regards,
Brat.

You are going to find that NONE of the mods for YABB SE work out of the box.

Bear in mind that many will be defunct as they are practically part of SMF (smilies etc). Others will have to be rewritten by the mod makers. You can port the table changes a mod makes over to SMF easy enough so it's only the source code that needs to be redone. I expect it will take a few weeks but after a short while I would imagine most "big" mods will have been ported over. Make no mistake - SMF isn't a small change from YABB SE - but it *will* be worth it - trust me ;)

EDIT: That said - you don't need to worry about data you had from old mods being lost. It will be relatively easy to port table changes over - by this I mean if you had a mod installed for YABB SE that added, for example, a biography section to your forums you can keep the members information for this but the code to display it in their profile etc would have to be rewritten. Basically - the data in the port will still be there but just not accessible until the mod maker (or someone else) ports the mod over. I *think* the upgrade script will keep redundant columns (ie ones mods added etc) but someone else would have to clarify this point
I'm only a half geek really...

One notable thing is that when I started on SMF... I didn't put any mods in.

That's right - so far, SMF does not use ANY YaBB SE mods over what YaBB SE 1.5.4 used. (and those have been VERY rewritten.)  I wrote all the changes - board level notifications, board level permissions, child boards, templates, themes, etc. myself.  None of the YaBB SE "sub boards" mods will transfer over.

I know that kinda sucks, but it's hard to transfer them over because they all used very different systems.  Things like smilies should be more possible because it won't be as different.

That said, the upgrade.php will not remove any columns - so the data will be there just not used... as Grudge said.

In this theme of questioning...

What about a converter from SuperMod YaBBSE ---> SMF?  ;D

(And btw, there's still a huge gap from the dropdown BBC menu to the rest of the BBC code graphics (starting from the flash code one).

I've not seen this issue... what browser?

I don't know about the Supermod...

Supermod should just be a bunch of mods of YaBB SE so unless they are doing more then that then the regular YaBB SE => SMF conversion should work. However don't expect all your mods to convert.

Since we're on this subject - How has the structure of the Member table changed?

I've added 8 profile fields, which I did by just adding 8 columns to the Members table.  I realize I'll probably have to re-write the php, but what about the data?

When I went from YaBB to YaBB SE in Feb I just made everyone re-enter it, but they probably wouldn't appreciate that again  :D

You're probably going to be met by a response something along the lines of "only the SMF team and Charter members have seen the changes to the db structure" :P

So that means that a SMF Team person or Charter Member can tell me what changed in the Member table  ;D  :D

I'm planning to become a charter member myself, but I was gonna wait until a beta comes out.
